Notorious BIG singed posthumously

Notorious BIG?s classic 1994 album Ready To Die has been taken off the shelves by a US judge after a jury ruled it contained an illegal sample.

Harde har har har.

About time. Using a tiny sample here or there is fair use enough, but a lot of these hip hop artists have been stealing entire "grooves" from others. Stevie Wonders been so ripped off that a lot of his music is more familiar in the looped and stolen context than the original.

I got no bone with hip hop, but Biggie and all of the other early 90s wannebe gangstas get no sympathy from me.

They all do it. Hip-hop is utter bilge these days. Like you say, entire grooves are taken and whole choruses sampled and its simply unoriginal theft.

Ill take a slice of old skool thanks, as well as well crafted beats you get worthwhile lyrical content.

most modern rappers are like professional wrestlers. The music is good because theyve all got great producers behind them, but everythings one-dimensional now. Rappers used to go on about some really interesting s*** but now its all like Everyones in the club - OK. If you look at me Im gonna f*** you up - yeah, I know that part. Im gonna steal your girl - yeah, I know that part too. Im wearing more jewellery than you - that as well. It doesnt do anything new that you havent heard before. Id like to hear something relevant to the black experience.

Theres some fun stuff out there, I like the Black Eyed Peas, Mos Def, and Kanye West just fine.

Oh yeah theres always a few exceptions. Even Kanye is running the risk of breaching the line with his latest effort though, not sure what its called but its one long sample.

What grinds a little is how so little effort is made on the turntablism side of things these days, Id pay good money for a fresh Eric B/Rakim team to come out of the woodwork.

Havent heard the whole Kanye album--so you may well be right. I just dug the big performance he did on TV here with a whole Baptist choir. It was very ambitious and overtly political, nary a beeeyatch or niggah to be found.

Turntablism is still alive and well, you just need to go to the right clubs over here. For some reason, mention of it made me think of the early raw Beastie Boy and NWA stuff.

It impresses me, but youre more likely to see me spend cabbage to see Gillian Welch sing about The Depresssion at the Mother Church (the Ryman).

Kanye is a nutter though, the whole rant he went on during the hurricane relief telephone even scared Mike Myers.

Got to agree though, alot of the stuff doesnt have the feel of old hip hop, i have never been the biggest of fans but i have to say the majority of the new stuff is pish

He was just pissed as hell and sometimes saying the truth is awkward. I wish he could have been more eloquent to be sure, but Im glad he said it. Meyers is a polite Canadian and thats the reason for his shock.

I think it was just the vacant look in his eyes

I heard a solid live performance of Goldigger he did on the radio with full ochestration going on, it was above and beyond the usual live performance standard so I can forgive him a little.

Hip Hops still doing just fine, youve just got to look a little harder for the good stuff :)

Aesop Rock, Cannibal Ox, MF Doom, DJ Format, Giant Panda, the Roots.  All wicked IMO.
