There was very little point in it, people have invested in computers already so that would just duplicate what they already have.
Most graphics and other game processing can be done more effectively locally. That leaves processing movements, actions, NPC decisions and working out the result to the server. - a far lower data transfer is required and is a more suitable workload division.

Pay a subscription, play whatever games you want for as long as you want, using nothing more than a raspberry PI.
That's about as massive a point to it as it could possibly have.
Just a shame Internet service providers aren't up with the times, just like movie providers are bitching about high data usage, yet are punting the latest smartphones out on cheaper and cheaper deals. The data transit industry needs a kick up the arse.
