PC build.. mega.. maybe

(1/3) > >>

Binary Shadow:
So I'm thinking of building a PC, mostly because I have been watching a ton of linus tech tips videos on youtube and love all the shiny stuff but also for work & gaming.

Last time I was into building PCs and watercooling was back in AMD A64X2 and AMD XP1700+ days (respectively).

So I want to build something badass. I want to run a hypervisor (maybe ESXi) and a ton of VMs on it by day, then swap the storage over and game by night.

So im thinking of decent number of cores, ton of ram, easily swappable SSD, a GPU for games, some kind of cooler and a case.

Fired up PC part picker and so far im looking at:

AMD Threadripper 2950x
ASUS ROG Zenith Extreme board
8x16GB Crucial Ballistix Tactical Tracer DDR4 3000MHz
EVGA SuperNova P2 1200 PSU
ASUS GeForce RTX 2080 Ti (maybe run 2 in SLI in the future)

And:

Storage:
Either an m.2 or SATA SSD (or both) that I can swap out (or just change the boot order in BIOS). Maybe RAID for the work stuff so if a drive does fail I wont have lost tons of effort.

Cooling:
Either a sealed WC system or a custom loop for GPU cooling to.

Case:
No idea but used to use lian li

Any suggestions? have I missed anything? Is there better value for money (probably because that's a fair wedge there)?

ERU:
I'm a bit like you, not watercooled for years or done anything projecty - I have no idea either...

But I DO know you should get some 3200mhz DDR4. At least that was my main aim with Ryzen.

I also wanted a good NVMe but prices were too high about a year ago. (So I went for a 256gb Adata.) They've dropped quite a bit now tho: Samsung 970 EVO NVMe M.2 500GB - £111.97 @ Laptops Direct

ERU:
Case deal:  Fractal Design Define XL R2 Case for Computer - Titanium
£79.99 - Amazon

Binary Shadow:
3200MHz RAM pushes the cost up a fair bit especially when looking at 128GB of it. Does it really make that much difference?

Iv been looking at the Samsung 970 EVO M.2 drive so thats good, probably get a few 1TB SATA SSDs for VM storage and run windows off the M.2 for gaming.

Nice case, id want something with a window to show off the awesome RGB lol

Keep your eye on Hot UK Deals over the coming weeks, I've seen loads of good case, graphics card, SSDs, memory, CPU, mobo, and PSU offers coming up, everything you could need.
