PC Upgrade questions

Hey all,
Little out of the loop on the PC hardware setup. I do not have the money for the top top end (who has? lol) with the crazy GPU prices etc but I have an office space in our new place and I would like to use my PC more and do a bit more gaming. Mainly Battlefield 5 when it comes out.


I have a good CPU, Case is fine, water cooling solution etc so I am looking at the improved gaming.


- I have an nvidia 960
- I have a 32nm Core i5 Intel CPU and supporting Motherboard with 32gb of ddr3 memory.

What would see me get a better perfomance boost? A new CPU, motherboard and memory and the graphics card will do, OR just a new GPU? OR All of it?

e next question is, with the new Nvidia chipset and cards about to role out I should wait and see with the older gen the prices should drop? What is a decent non top end should I look at? 1060 or 1070?

For the CPU, Motherboard and memory what is a good combo?

between home and work I'm running an i5 2500k, good ryzen and a good i7 (can't remember the spec)

and here's naff all difference between them

ryzen system runs an nvme vs sata ssd in the other systems... might make a difference but can't really be sure

try battlefield and see what it's like?  - if you need a boost then a new gfx card is the way to go :-o

I think that I5 is exactly the one I got. So you think just a new GPU will do the trick?

I've kept the same CPU and upgraded the GPU 3 times, can't remember what I started with GPU wise but then went to a 7850 and currently have a 6GB 1060.

I run at 1440p resolution and haven't had an issue, I think you can get CPU bottle-necking at 1440p and above, though I've never noticeably come across it  :thumbup: though I think for 4k or such you'd definitely run into an issue with a lack of CPU power.

I've got essentially the same rig as I had on here from my last Turbo mega ultra upgrade shogun brexit deal thread: i7 3770K @ 3.5Ghz, 32GB RAM and a motherboard so old it only has two USB 3.0 ports that were bleeding edge at the time.

The only things I've upgraded in that time are more/bigger/faster SSDs and two graphics cards. I'm currently running a 970 GTX and 1440p ultrawide screen, and can happily max most games at 3440 x 1440 (haven't tried the latest triple AAAs to be fair).

m.2/nvme drives and their performance would be a nice to have as even my SSDs feel sluggish at times, but in reality the only thing I still would need to upgrade is the graphics card to max out the latest games. As you pointed out the latest batch are out soon which offer little benefit or performance over current gen and the 1070/1080 cards are on the price drop as we speak, mnoreso as crypto mining is finally on the downturn. I'd keep the rest of your system as is and focus on a graphics for now; I'd probably be aiming to grab a 1080Ti when the prices drop suitably far. Wait for the prices of new boards, DDR4, etc to come down in price before considering upgrading the rest of the system, as that could cost you half a ton easily. Like Matt said unless you're running at 1440p+ I don't think you will see CPU bottlenecks for a while.
