PC Upgrade questions
on: September 13, 2018, 05:44:58 AM
Hey all,
Little out of the loop on the PC hardware setup. I do not have the money for the top top end (who has? lol) with the crazy GPU prices etc but I have an office space in our new place and I would like to use my PC more and do a bit more gaming. Mainly Battlefield 5 when it comes out.

I have a good CPU, Case is fine, water cooling solution etc so I am looking at the improved gaming.

- I have an nvidia 960
- I have a 32nm Core i5 Intel CPU and supporting Motherboard with 32gb of ddr3 memory.

What would see me get a better perfomance boost? A new CPU, motherboard and memory and the graphics card will do, OR just a new GPU? OR All of it?

e next question is, with the new Nvidia chipset and cards about to role out I should wait and see with the older gen the prices should drop? What is a decent non top end should I look at? 1060 or 1070?

For the CPU, Motherboard and memory what is a good combo?
Thanks

between home and work I'm running an i5 2500k, good ryzen and a good i7 (can't remember the spec)

and here's naff all difference between them

ryzen system runs an nvme vs sata ssd in the other systems... might make a difference but can't really be sure

try battlefield and see what it's like?  - if you need a boost then a new gfx card is the way to go :-o

I think that I5 is exactly the one I got. So you think just a new GPU will do the trick?

Another i5 2500k user here

I've kept the same CPU and upgraded the GPU 3 times, can't remember what I started with GPU wise but then went to a 7850 and currently have a 6GB 1060.

I run at 1440p resolution and haven't had an issue, I think you can get CPU bottle-necking at 1440p and above, though I've never noticeably come across it  though I think for 4k or such you'd definitely run into an issue with a lack of CPU power.

I've got essentially the same rig as I had on here from my last Turbo mega ultra upgrade shogun brexit deal thread: i7 3770K @ 3.5Ghz, 32GB RAM and a motherboard so old it only has two USB 3.0 ports that were bleeding edge at the time.

The only things I've upgraded in that time are more/bigger/faster SSDs and two graphics cards. I'm currently running a 970 GTX and 1440p ultrawide screen, and can happily max most games at 3440 x 1440 (haven't tried the latest triple AAAs to be fair).

m.2/nvme drives and their performance would be a nice to have as even my SSDs feel sluggish at times, but in reality the only thing I still would need to upgrade is the graphics card to max out the latest games. As you pointed out the latest batch are out soon which offer little benefit or performance over current gen and the 1070/1080 cards are on the price drop as we speak, mnoreso as crypto mining is finally on the downturn. I'd keep the rest of your system as is and focus on a graphics for now; I'd probably be aiming to grab a 1080Ti when the prices drop suitably far. Wait for the prices of new boards, DDR4, etc to come down in price before considering upgrading the rest of the system, as that could cost you half a ton easily. Like Matt said unless you're running at 1440p+ I don't think you will see CPU bottlenecks for a while.

Yours is the most interesting Nige,
You have the same GPU as me and an ultrawide as well. I noticed frame issues in battlefield 1 but your indication is that it could be my CPU more then anything.

Does a New Mobo, New I7 (not top end but decent) and memory sooner then later sound like a Plan and then once the new NVidia cards have been out for a bit look to pick up a 1070 when those prices drop?

I think this sounds like a plan?

With that what CPU, Mobo and Memory combo should I look to get?

Problem is you'll need DDR4, that's £150+ worth our money; you'll need a decent mobo at £100 ish, plus your new i5/i7. That's £500 easily. I reckon the graphics card will drop in price before the rest of the system components do, but its hard to say. I would aim to upgrade the graphics now to a 1080/1080Ti maybe in black friday sales and skip this next gen of cards, as they don't offer enough performance increase and the new features like ray tracing, etc will be gimmicky for some time. Plan on upgrading the core components after, then get the next gen of graphics card after that which should be much better performing and down to 7nm architecture.

I'm still using my I5-4670K 16GB ram, Nvidea GeForce Gtx 970. Runs OK even at 4K. Haven't bothered OCing much.

Have thought of one of the new 20X0 graphics cards but there still isn't any games that use it fully.

Still thinking of getting a 49 inch 4K TV as a monitor, the text at 32" 4K is really too small for me to always see easily.

I have the Predator Ultrawide. I basically have the same spec as you but it chugs with the frames for me in Battlefield 1.

Guild wars 2 suffers badly with 120 players or so are together, but virtually every system lags when that happens. Early on they had an invasion of Lion's Arch event, you could see the ground, a few other players but almost no enemies. It's improved a lot since that happened. Then I can claim it's the game that's lagging rather than me.

Star Citizen also suffers badly but that's still in alpha, I've managed to crash into every planet I've visited so far, although I did manage to land a couple of times too. Going to sleep while piloting is not a good option. Thankfully got infinite insurance hopefully until they go live but I'm doing very little if anything in the game.

I went with A Ryzen 5 2600 and 16gb ddr4 3200mhz and semi decent motherboard. And run my 970 with that setup.

See how I go.

I ended up buying a Asus 1070 8GB OC edition card as well.
