Forgot to mention fring

Take one free sipgate account with a uk geographical number (020,029,0117... style)

Take fring and the sip plugin (all free)

Go abroad and disable your cellular network, but turn on wifi.

Now friends and family can call you in your hotel in canada by dialling a local uk number.

Alternatively, you can call them from your local number too.

I use sipgate for my main house phone as the number follows me wherever I move, just requires the internet. Fring lets me pick up house calls on my mobile phone when i'm out.

Perfect pairing would work with any android sip client but fring just works and gives me access to msn folk too :)

I have stopped using Fring in favour of a dedicated sip app if need be for that for work calling.
Everything is pretty much skype, imessage and the odd whatsapp these days.

Skype charges for an external london number last I used it.

What's app is just messaging no?

Sip is the way. Been using it for nigh on 6 years, it's fantastic. Lived in 3 different places and yet still have the same number, use it all the time when abroad.

Until google voice hits the uk, nothing can beat it.

A lot of family and friends are in the UK. Skype or facetime is all free through the wifi and there is more free wifi out and about every day, even here. Even banks offer free wifi.
SIP is awesome but bar the odd messaging I do not need to make many calls. Even tweet more then ring.

My family and friends aren't always at a computer :) this way they can call me from wherever, house phone, work, mobile and it doesn't cost me anything :)

Get a UK number from sipgate and then they can call you for local rates wherever they are in the uk. ;)
