Author Topic: Retailers Brace for the PS3 - Store that got 50-100 360s will get 20 PS3  (Read 1596 times)

Early PS2 shortages are legendary, the first time that we saw such huge demand for a console and such a low number of units at launch. And the rumors are flying wildly that the PS3 might be the toughest system to get your hands on at launch to date. Add the rumors to Sonys constantly fluid launch date and an overall lack of consumer confidence about what they will actually be able to deliver, and retailers are already getting skittish when it comes to the PS3.

Sonys multiple configuration launch is sure to create at least a few headaches for retail workers struggling to help moms, dads and grandparents understand the difference between 20GB and 60GB hard drives. Imagine explaining to the same group of non-gamer customers the relative value of Memory Stick support or HDMI connections. Retail employees have their work cut out for them this Fall.

An internal Gamestop email expressed concern over how many PS3s their chain (which is the largest videogame retailer and includes Ebgames as well) would have available. A local store that received between 50 and 100 Xbox 360s at launch is expecting to get no more than 20 PS3s.

Considering how hard it was to get hold of a 360 on release this is going to hurt Sony.

Kids wanting a console for Chrimbo will get the 360 if the PS3 isnt available.
It's all fun and games until a 200' robot dinosaur shows up and trashes Neo-Tokyo… Again.

I reckon most of the "I want/I need... kids/spoilt brats will already have a 360 - they all got one a few months ago - plus the target market for consoles seems to be increasing - people who grew up with atari, NES, master system etc.. are now in thier 20s - 30s

IMO shortage will just increase press coverage on launch and make it a coveted item - so long as it turns out to be ok & the rumours ref performance/overheating etc.. turn out to be false - then a load of people will be after one - plenty of people will also be waiting for a price drop too - so I dont think it will necessarily harm sony if there is a shortage at a launch.

Im in no hurry to upgrade my console - Im pretty happy with my ps2 at the moment but I think I will eventually get a ps3 (though not at launch) - will probably get one when GTA4 comes out - main reason Id like to go for the Ps3 as opposed to the Xbox is for blue ray though tbh..

Id rather pay £500 for a blue ray player than a console with blue ray built in.
Look at the quality difference between the PS2 and a standalone DVD player.

the Xbox is closer to the quality of a standalone, but the standalone wins every time.   The PS2 is just horrible to watch DVDs on.  I bought a standalone for that very reason, and I have no reason to believe the PS3 will be any different.

A stand alone DVD player costs less than £30 though so it isnt exactly going to break the proverbial bank.

ps2 wasnt designed to be a dvd player as much as the ps3 is

it just used dvds for content so dvd playback was added after

i agree on consoles being crap for movie playback, they usually lose some of the tech for playback to get more from gaming

not gonna judge the ps3 playback before i see it though

  • Six shots or five?
I lost faith in Sony when I saw the price tag and with all the rumors of hardware problems and that it supposedly ist any better than the 360 gfx wise I will be getting a 360 if and when I bother to upgrade my Xbox.

Those players are pretty poor on quality though, not that much different to a PS2 IMO.

The £100 mark will net you a good DVD player, I can see the cheap Blue-ray players suffering.
