Router for VPN and DNS server?
on: August 25, 2014, 18:57:00 PM
Hi All,

I'm looking for a sturdy gigabit router that can:

- Handle >100MBit WAN Ethernet (Gigabit WAN)
- Allow VPN without separate licence (via laptop or smartphone)
- Resolve netbios names over DNS via VPN and on local network.
- Not be a right pita to configure, i.e. webgui over CLI, although I dont mind having to delve in to the CLI occasionally, but I don't want ot have to go on a cisco course just to get a basic connection up an running!
- Budget is open,

What I don't need:
- Wifi
- Lots of LAN ports
- ADSL modem
- A PC based server solution (Although might look in to this as well)

Any advice or previous experience welcome..

EDIT:

I have looked at cisco RV325 but looks like the DNS element is not there, although I can't find a definitive answer...

Why didn't I look at draytek! Looks perfect for what I need! Will have a proper look when I'm not sat in a hotel on the slowest internet!

Are you or anyone else using VPN on drayteks, any issues or anything?

Drayteks are good solid units and I've not seen many do wrong. I'm not sure about DNS as there is usually a windows server doing DNS sat behind it for VPN.

VPNs are pretty reliable, the web interface could be better but is fairly straightfowrd.

If you have FTTC make sure you get one that supports it - and google cos there's a couple of settings you need to tweak.  This doesn't apply to you from the sounds of it but may help others.

I know sh*ts bad right now with all that starving bullsh*t and the dust storms and we are running out of french fries and burrito coverings.

So from being originally happy, now a little uncertain.. But only because I'm not sure about the LAN DNS support, it appears that it may have been a mistake on drayteks part:

Really need someone with a 2920 to check latest firmware :-)

So the 2920 does not appear to support it's own DNS server....

So I have downloaded a DNS/DHCP server to run on my microserver, which is already running my VPN currently, and after much dicking around, it appears to be all working my apple devices no longer require IP addresses to RDP in to my server, or gain web access to my server! And VPN is all routing via the DNS as well, took me probably a couple of hours to work it out but this was mostly because the VPN and DNS were not playing nice with each other!

Using this:

 ;D

Thanks for your help guys!

Just a quick update on this, I've reverted back to using Virgin DHCP/DNS  :(

Something screwy was happening with the DNS, everything worked fine apart from my PS4 was having issues sending game invites and getting DNS timeouts!!

No idea what was going on, but it appeared to be resolving and responding at the server end!

So back to looking for a hardware based solution for the moment, I'm fine for the VPN not to be on the router, but I need something that can act as a DNS to resolve local network names from DNS!

Ideas on a post card!

The 2925 or 2830 looks like it may do the job I'm looking for...
