Seagate 1.5Tb faster than Raptors

A Barracuda 7200.11 ST31500341AS (1.5Tb) drive can be limited to a capacity of 300Gb and outperform a 300Gb Raptor in most tests.

Exciting stuff, sadly i have more need for capacity than speed nowadays.

Quite cool but not really what Im after. My next computer will prob have a SSD OS drive and then a couple huge storage drives anyway :)

Thats what I have in mind also for my next build (mid 2010), raid 0 a couple of smallish (60/80/100 whatever) SSDs and the rest on network :)

i wonder why its so much faster ?  the review and a quick google isnt telling me anything...

when i clicked the link i assumed the drive could split the platters up and raiding them or soeehting like that...

Its only accessing the outer edges of the platters where speed is maximised and seek times reduced as the head moves less. Its also supposed to increase drive lifespan and promote fertility*

but.... if thats right.... why arnt the drives fast like that as long as youre using less than 300gig of it ?

they wright from the outside in anyway, and and head will only move the same amount ?

Not seek times but read, seek times are the same no matter where the data is on a platter, but read times increases dramatically the further out you go due to the higher speed of the surface allowing more data to be read in a given time.

Why not just create a 300GB partition?  The first 300GB would be on the outside of the disk and thus you end up with the same outcome.

This is just BS.

Yes, seek times. As in the amount of time the head spends seeking the data on the platter. If its all on the outside of the platter then it has to do far less seeking from its point of origin hence a lower seek time.

Yes.

Also, Ive been thinking of going solid state, but it seems that unless you want to spend hundreds on a top brand SSD and ensure you have your swap file on a seperate drive, youre going to end up with severe loss of speed due to degredation after a while. Its kind of off putting!

Couldnt agree more. I actually tried the solid state Asus EEE not too long ago and ended up picking up the standard hard drive model as there just wasnt any real noticeable speed improvement and the thought of ending up with a duff disk after a lot of use really put me off, not to mention it was twice the capacity and actually a higher battery life for less money.

The access time with an SSD is faster but the throughput rate of data has been slower, which sort of evens things up.

I would expect an SSD to work perfectly for several years at least before it dies, the problem is the price hike and low capacity make it uneconomical for most purposes.

I cant see any reason to go SSD or raptor now, you might as well RAID 0 two smaller capacity drives.

I cant wait for them to sort out some SSD drives that dont degrade..... NEEEEEED 6 of them in raid 0 !

Im tempted to get them now.... if only I knew how long theyd last !
