Guitar learning schenanigans.
on: May 01, 2006, 01:40:18 AM
Well.. I was taught to play classical guitar for 6 years, unfortunately I had a crap teacher who kept me on the same pieces of music for 2 years a time, in 6 years I did 3 gradings and got to Grade 2 (I did the initial grading.. the pointless grading), when friends I knew were with other teachers and were grade 4 and 5 standard.

Now... years later I can still play some of those damn pieces because they are stuck in my head from that sadistic bastard... sorry but he was.

So... as I still own my guitar and in fact own an electric now on the side, decided to visit some old sites I remember after googling a bit :)

http://www.wholenote.com/default.asp?iTarget=http%3A//www.wholenote.com/cgi-bin/page_view.pl%3Fl%3D10875%26p%3D1%26a%3D0 was the first hit, and its a song Ive fallen in love with. Simplistic to play :) sounds absolutely lush though :) (Flick to page 2... as the first page is a bit pants.. page 2 is the one Ive fallen for)

Thinking of recording myself, then playing some chords as a backing track on it. :)

But yeah, just a heads up... those looking for guitar lessons, I forgot how good Wholenote.com was :) check it out: http://www.wholenote.com

but the biggest thing ive learnt is changing up an instrument.
i started on a heavenly spanish acoustic, which i put a .56 gauge string on it so i could get drop a :) tuning

an then i got for my 21st my ovation semi acoustic (with stupidly light strings which i now hate  :gag:  :gag:  :gag:  :gag:  :gag:  :gag:  :gag:  :gag:)

relearning what made me pick it up made me really thing about what i was doing.

i do advise when buying a new guitar go for a different style of neck each time. say like nice broad necks with gibson, narrow and a better curve with a rolled edge (fender) or really flat and fast necks like ibanez.

chop and change to suit till you have your sound and your feel :)

My head hurts.....

Ive never had guitar lessons, hate reading theory, hate playing other peoples songs..........  I just play what comes to me.

Ive never looked at a scale in my life.

then if you want to advance technically, and musically you have to learn other peoples stuff to get yourself to learn your instrument.

otherwise if you have an amasing riff in your head, and musically you havent a clue how to play it, you feel kinda silly.

plus the more i learn the better i become because its variation in styles etc.. which makes you think.

im currently on a jame iha binge atm.
oh the sickly sweet nature...
