Could the next COD be Pay2Play Multiplayer?

"We think that it is incumbent upon Activision, with the most popular multiplayer game, to take the first step to address monetization of multiplayer. It is too early to tell whether that will be a monthly subscription, tournament entry fees, microtransaction fees, or a combination of all three, but we expect to see the company take some action by year-end, when Call of Duty Black Ops launches," Pachter commented.

I would say its kind of obvious really, i read an interview back along where a spokesman for Activision stated that they wanted to address other franchises with the WOW subscription model, and COD was brought up in that conversation as well. (It was around the time West and Zampella left).

paying 2 play wont work IMO.
It works for MMORPG because of the content & even if you suck you can still get a decent gaming experience.

I cant play them type of shooting games because of motion sickness, I still own a few just to have a 10min blast here & there,
but I suck at it. Besides that, what new content can they offer? a few new maps or weapons, etc. - cant really go big on gear upgrades
because it will people OP to newer people. Also it has a short lifespan.. unless they are going to sell the game for £9.99 & charge £4.99
a month to play... what happens in 12-18months when they bring a new COD out?

the game isnt even as good as counter strike.

As Egg pointed out, the reason it works for MMOs is they generally have regular updates to include large new content updates, areas, races, weapons/armors, quests, level caps etc etc.

It makes no apparent sense, they have been using the same business model for years with FPS etc, the difference now is that we are coming out of a recession, consumer spending is down and these companies are looking for more ways to address this fact, now everyone is hooked on the Multiplayer market its only apparently "right" for them to squeeze free money out of that, its presumable you wont get anymore than you are now, except if your lucky they might throw an item shop into the mix as well to squeeze further revenue.

This argument is invalid though, the console generation will just pay it without argument, gone are the days of well priced gaming, in 2010 and beyond its going to be an expensive hobby.

Id be interested to know the figures of the number of people that play games like CoD offline, and those that play online. I know people do both, but there are also the distinct campls of multiplayer fans, and people that cant stand it. I for one prefer single player games with strong storylines that suck you in and which cant be completed in a weekend. Hence why I have yet to buy MW2. If they want to bring out a CoD game that is cheaper but is single player only, and then charge a subscription for the multiplayer aspects, Id be happy with that, after all until now when Ive been buying games with multiplayer Ive been paying for features I dont use or want :D

Of course, they wont do this. What I fear most is that they will make it subscription to even play single player, boggling thought, but only a little more boggling than the above.
