Tablet Recommendation

The wife came to the pub last night wanting to know if an iPad would do what she wanted it to do.  Up until I told her how much one costs.

Shes looking for a way of :

Taking a register easily at the local guide group she runs, and keeping contact details up to date.
The rest of the leaders are using Google Docs, and this will need to be used in an off-line capacity, as there is no internet connection in the church.
She would also like a way of using it to watch movies and music when she is away, so a reasonable battery life would be preferential.

My criteria.
Capacitive touch screen,
Expandable memory
USB Host ability - for cameras, etc.
Not Apple.
Wifi

What can you suggest?

I used to own an HP IPAQ, which was great for general office tasks, but not so great for media. You can get em really cheap on ebay at the moment. I saw an almost new one go for £50 the other day and it was not the oldest model.  :ptu:

If I had the choice I would have an Ipad anyday over the IPAQ

Wait, there are a few android based ones and others. HP will have some running their web OS too by the end of the year.

With the exception of the movie stuff, you could almost get away with an iPhone/Android, and then youd also have the ability to make calls, possibly handy in a guide group in case of emergencies?

My Wifes a Brownie and Guide leader as well.  What electronic docs she does need arent many, and she manages them using her HD2 with google docs, and office mobile.

I dunno really, but shes been managing from her blackberry, but it doesnt have the google apps stuff, that ive seen anyway...

My personal preference would be to not have one at all.  I dont really want to look like a market researcher / Maître d at a fancy restaurant.

Ive mentioned the possibility of upgrading her Wind to be a touch screen, which might be useful, and a tenth of the price!

Most of their forms etc are going online for printing out.  Ive seen the wife using the new system, however its designed with cost and usability in mind.  I doubt youre going to have much scope for anything that cant run Office and PDF documents natively.  Last weekend a group of 2000 of the little Stromtroopers was handled with printouts and paper registers printed by each unit.

You still have to print out all the forms etc for the parents to sign, its why I bought a laser printer.  Herself was chewing through a set of ink cars a month, and couldnt put claims in for them all.  These days they buy a toner cart every 6 months for £40, and I buy the one in between.

There are plenty of noises about capacitive touch screen netbooks but Ive not seen much of them except for demonstration models.

Lots of cheap options on dealextreme but my advice would be to wait 6 months until there is a decent selection from other manufacturers.
