Suggestions - Media Center keyboard/mouse combo?
on: April 21, 2013, 13:33:02 PM
Hi Guys,

What's everyone using with their media center? I've just replaced my old Acer Revo with the C2D Antec Fusion that Rhino was selling, and the mouse and keyboard was is nice with the Revo but will be given away with it.

I usually just used the mouse an the on screen keyboard, but just wondering if anyone has an good suggestions for a HTPC keyboard/mouse in the bedroom, I don't want anything too big, and will largely be using the mouse, but is handy to have the keyboard as well..

I'd be looking for a keyboard with a built in trackball/pad like the Logitech dinovo mini. Enermax do something similar and from having a glance at a thread over on AVForums it seems there's a lot of options in the US, not sure what sort of h/w is available over here though. They aren't really cheap as well.

Use your phone.
Or a hdmi Cec adapter and use the tv remote.

Thanks guys...

Phone may not be a bad idea actually.. I've already got the mobile mouse app that I could use, although a little bit of a pain in the arse if the Mrs wants to watch something in bed if I'm not around.. although may have an android that'll do the job..

As far as the logitech goes it's a lot of money and I'm not sure I like the flap?, here are 3 alternatives that I have come across for less than half price (although I know the quality may not be the same):

http://www.amazon.co.uk/TECEVO-Bluetooth-Wireless-Handhold-Microphone/dp/B00BATFK5A/ref=cm_cr_pr_pb_t

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Qwerty-M-Track-Wireless-Keyboard-Trackball/dp/B00ABGWWPE/ref=sr_1_6?s=computers&ie=UTF8&qid=1366574552&sr=1-6&keywords=mini+wireless+keyboard

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Wireless-Keyboard-Multi-Touch-Gesture-Touchpad/dp/B004V2T7F2/ref=cm_cr_pr_product_top

In terms of using a TV remote or xbmc constellation the case will actually work with a MCE remote out of the box, but doesn't give mouse control (I don't use XBMC as I play films off the network directly or use streaming TV off the net, and is quicker without it..

Anyone using something similar to the above linked products?

Other alternative.. might just get another mouse :)

Over the years I have had plenty of cheaper more compact keyboard/touchpad combo's for my HTPC none lasted much over 3 months of daily use tbh, I came to the conclusion your can't beat a decent full sized, so for the last 3 years or so I have been using a Logitech Dinovo Edge, while it is full size it is thin so not unwieldy and looks smart in its charger stand.

Thanks for all the suggestions guys, but as a controller for my bedroom pc I went for my third option, supporting multi touch and media buttons and a compact keyboard, I'm really impressed with it, it's very responsive and compact and feels quite sturdy, I'll let you know if I have any problems with it!
