Title: Supreme Commander
Post by: Cypher on May 15, 2006, 16:36:01 PM
Well Ive had my eye on this game ever since the first concept art was released.  For those who missed the original thread in the old forums, this is the follow up to Total Annihilation.

Since we have some more news, screenshots and most importantly a functional website, I thought it was time for a new thread/update.

http://www.supremecommander.com/

The game features 3 main factions, Aeon, Cybran & UEF.  One of the major differances is with scale, big stompy mechs, really are big stompy mechs and have a presence and major advantage on the field.

I really do like the retro look the game has with the modern detailing, IE the water, explosions etc.   Its is looking quite exciting.

A spiritual succesor to the greatest RTS game ever? Oh yes. 8)

Its a real shame cavedog died just as they were getting their online gaming network set up for TA, it wouldve been just as popular online as Starcraft/battle.net is (like the tournaments they hold in South Korea).

Oh and has anyone ever played TA:Spring (http://taspring.clan-sy.com/screenshots.php)? 8)

Ive not gotten round to buying Empires at War yet actually, was thinking more of a scene from Episode one where the trade federation droids are being deployed. Still, very cool. :) 8)

waiting for this so much so ive put it on pre-order alread

empire at ware was a little underwhelming once youd played through it once and gotten over the "woo dead star destroyer :D" etc,
skirmishes are fun but doesnt seem to have the addicition i got from TA skirmishes or even C&C red alert

originally i thought there was talk of supreme commander not having a resource system in it and being purely conflict.... i would have been gutted.
thankfully it sounds like the classic TA energy and metal rule once more

invinvicible defence here i come

I always spent the first few hours on a large skirmish just playing invinvible defense and also making everything look pretty.... unlike the AIs lets place things anywhere!

hmmm im tempted to run a TA skirmish, still got it installed on one of the other drives, patched up, modded up and ready for the cd....

damnit i can see me playing it tonight, running TA @ 1280 x1024 and wishing I dropped the res to something i can click on stuff with

Indeed, same here, everything nicely placed.  :-)

Even number of defensive turrets, sit back and enjoy the fireworks as the enemy send wave after wave.

Bringing back TA..

http://www.rakrent.com/rtsc/rtsc_totala.htm

That is an amazing site for all RTS stuff but got a very good section on TA including lots and lots of mods.

Think im going to have to dig it up when i get home

The greatest mod, TAUCP : http://www.planetannihilation.com/taucp/features.htm 8)

Best new feature has to be the walls and gates, if you play with a defensive style. :)

I never tried any of the big mods for TA, just the orginal game patched up with all extra offical units and then later got hold of the CC and BT addons
Title: Re:Supreme Commander
Post by: Cypher on May 17, 2006, 15:44:43 PM
I tired a few unit mods over the years, some were good, some just screwed up the enemy AI.  Will have to look into that one.

I saw that awhile ago but never got round to try it... remaking TA in a new engine with rebalacing - got to give those people some credit!

May try this at the weekend

best thing used to be staggering dragons teeth a 1/4 square off the medium laser towers (green shooting uns) to stop splash damage then use a backup of missle launchers staggered behind em.

if i find a screen shot key in it, ill post some screenies, im in that mood

well looked like a supreme screenie so i blanked it, dohhhh, spent loads of time last night playing that.

its got some quirks, bugsand what not but on the whole, fantabulous being able to run it in 3d with shiny polygons

Friends have spoken to me about it and I seem to recall it, but I was always a fan of C&C more than any other RTS out there. Earth 2140 had me for a while but yeah C&C is what I played.

How closely does TA resemble C&C?
Title: Re:Supreme Commander
Post by: Cypher on May 18, 2006, 23:37:38 PM
In the sense of fast paced strategy, non stop action.  Nothing like generals mind.

If you liked C&C 1,  Red Alert 1 & 2, you will love TA.
Title: Supreme Commander
Post by: redneck on May 18, 2006, 23:59:46 PM
ta was the ultimate rts.

well apart from the original c&c an red alert but this thing kicked arse with a big spikey boot with landmines on.
Title: Re:Supreme Commander
Post by: M3ta7h3ad on May 19, 2006, 01:27:46 AM
Sweet as! :)

I loved red alert. Its the only C&C Ive played. well with the add ons (counterstrike and aftermath).

I love it to bits, used to play massive maps with only 1 AI as well as me, and make perimeter fences and walls around the base. Made em all pretty :) Even made turret walls around ore fields to protect my gazillion ore trucks :D

Now thats the kinda game I like to play.

Empire at war disappointed me because it had unit limits. I couldnt do mad rushes.

Also...once the base shields were down (piss easy) 2 AT-ATs or just a single squad of rebel tanks could destroy the rest.

I would recommend you keep your eyes on this beauty then (unless you go out and buy TA)

I havnt looked forward to a game this much since... hmmm i think homeworld 2

The wait for HL2 didnt really bother me for some reason, as i think i said before the last game that the wait killed me with was Homeworld 2

*Update*

Tbh, this is the only game that has and has managed to keep my attention.  These days I dont really follow game development religously as I used too.  Not since HL2 really.

Anyway, there is an exclusive demo out for fileplanet subscribers, if you are one I strongly recommend trying it. :)

Here are a
few links to some new footage, demonstrations & screenshots for you. :)

the 2.7 beta is crackable for some 15 mins into it 0.5 fps (!!!) skirmish goodness against the no where near final, but can use most of the game fetures well, ai.

aparently multiplayer lan works as well but ive not tried it.

GAH i want the finished game right now

finally found the cause to my slowdown,
the beta doesnt like my nforce 2 sound drivers,

once i added /nosound to the shortcut, all was well and had a really playable enjoyable game vs 3 ais

if you go to the official forums at www.gaspoweredgames.com

or even www.supremecommander.com  there are open discussions on how to get sorted.

Soory Max, as its a closed beta I am going to have to remove your links.  I did send you a PM regarding this.

Multiplayer Beta downloads are provided exclusively by [FilePlanet.com] Please visit FilePlanet in order to apply for entry to the beta. Entry is available only to users that meet the betas system requirements, and space is limited by GPG in order to perform specific tests of the included matchmaking services.

To get access you have to be a paid up premium memober at File Planet and to have got a key from them.  They quickly ran out of keys apparently.  Sorry, you guys will just have to wait.
