Anyone "do" Wordpress templates (for some $$$) ?
on: August 16, 2011, 22:16:39 PM
I've kinda offered to help a friend port/redevelop his business website as a Wordpress site. Only I haven't got much time or the faintest idea what I'm doing !

So if I come up with a couple of layout sketches would anyone be interested in turning them into a Wordpress template ? I've not got much of a budget but hopefully I'm not really asking too much either...

Wordpress templating can be a beeech, but I could possibly have a crack if you don't get any other offers, depends how quickly you need it doing really.

I would suggest looking on the Wordpress themes site first and find something very close to matching what you're after, then tweak from there. Hacking an existing design up or ground up designing one is a mare.

Roger that :)

I don't know what I was thinking when I suggested getting involved. I'll have a poke around with some templates and the editor, I'm not the dumbest brick so perhaps I'll pick it up as I go ?   :panic:

If you know html/css to any reasonable degree its quite simple, the hard part is picking through php loops for Wordpress processes coupled with the fact that templates are split into a number of seperate files to accommodate these processes. Hence, if you take a base design thats close to what you want to achieve, it will be easy to change the CSS without having to do any heavy editing, add in additional Widget positions, etc, which is where the infuriation will set in  :D

I have to say that I'm quite impressed with how easy it actually is.
My html/php and css skills are from about a decade ago but editing templates 'feels' right to me; it's how I used to layout my sites :o

The design/layout I'm going to create is never going to be as professional as it would be if he paid a web developer to do it but hopefully it'll help to show him what's possible.

It took about 2 hours to install/configure WP and then port his existing site into a WP format ! Now the hard work of improving the site begins :)

That'll depend on how sh*t it is. Given what most people on this forum seem to be capable of, there's every chance I'll be keeping it to myself ;)
