Need help people.
Got myself that twonky media server to install on my buffalo LS-CHL 1.0TB NAS. But by fook can I get port 23 opened on the bastard to install it. I have the latest firmware version 1.24 installed. is
I have used the acp_commander, it tells me that port 23 is opened and the root password is reset, but when I run telent to connect to the IP all i get is "Could not connect to the host, on port 23: connection failed.
I have been through google dont know how many times and still no luck. Any help would be great!!
-
Ill try and fire mine up again later. Its been sat in the corner looking sad since the last time I completely screwed it over :)
-
1st things 1st, make sure youre using putty.
Reset the linkstation using the interface and run acp_commander again, making sure you are elevated.
Putty just makes things easier :D
-
Ok, got putty,
what you mean reset ? Factory default or just a reboot via the web console? And by elevated I assume you mean logged in as admin.
-
Sorry, forgot about this thread.
Using the web console, hit the factory reset. You wont lose data but it will reset the root password.
If you are using StevieWonder, this is a required step.
-
WHats StevieWonder?
Think I may have bricked my unit. Tried a firmware down grade I got on another forum, but I cant access the drive. No flashing red lights, still getting the blue light, but when I do a factory reset the device cant be found on the network. C**k!
-
Blue Light? Mine are green!
Whats the model number of your Linkstation, as they dont have Telnet out the box.
-
Mines the Linkstation LS-CHL 1.0TB
Blue lights on mine
-
Ah, fair enough. Mines a V2.
It shouldnt be too bad if youve bricked it. It should respond to TFTP.
-
Gave in and rang buffallo, they have sent me instructions on how to get it into EM mode. FIngers crossed
How do you get into TFT Boot
-
http://forums.buffalotech.com/t5/Storage/FAQ-3-of-4-TFTP-boot-procedure-please-read-this/td-p/11015
-
Breaking my heart this....grrrrr
Havent been able to get it into EM mode. Gonna try the TFT Boot. Might be fecking this thing at wall!!
-
When Ive had my lunch, Ill talk you through it.
How much data is on the drive?
-
1Tb
Brought thedrive in with me to work since we are quite
-
So the drive is full?
That might make it problematic.
Is it backed up anywhere? As I have a guaranteed way to get it into EM mode, but it will cost your data.
-
Not full.
But no backups :( Cant lose the data, all the pics of the wee man.
-
Ok. Bit daft trying to hack the box with no backups :D
Have you changed the computers IP address to match the IP required by TFTP?
I think the default ip for the nas becomes 192.168.11.1, so set your computer to 192.168.11.2.
Run TFTP and connect the NAS directly to the computer. It should see the NAS and take the boot files from the computer. Then you can force a flash from the PC.
Just do a plain firmware update, as otherwise youll lose the data.
-
Oh Im a complete tool and would be the first to admit it lol.
Try the TFT boot now, I was using was 192.168.11.1 as my NIC IP...duh
-
Good Luck!
-
7 Red lights when i booted before doing the tftp boot......balls
-
Run TFTP before turning the box on.
-
HAve the tftp runnning then boot the unit?
-
Yeah. Thats the way Ive done it. TFTP will keep the line open and intercept the NAS when it polls.
And make sure all firewalls are off. It can be temperamental.
-
No joy,
Boots up flashing blue light then after 15/20 sexs goes to flashing rid light :(
-
Doesnt sound drastic tbh, It should be looking for the TFTP during that part.
Are you connected directly to the unit, not going through any switches etc?
If you have any other network adapters, disable them.
Turn off your firewall.
Make sure TFTP is running elevated too.
Edit.
http://buffalo.nas-central.org/wiki/Revive_your_arm9_box_from_scratch
According to that, the PC needs to be on 192.168.11.1
-
Firewalls and AV disabled,
Connected directly with IP 192.168.11.2, subnet and defualt gateway in.
How do i run it elevated?
-
My bad, you need to make sure the PC is 11.1
Elevated means you right click and "Run as Administrator"
-
Im the local admin on the PC. Thats the same?
-
Is it XP, Vista or 7?
-
XP
Getting somewhere, it has serverd blocks but the command window is still open and I cant ping the unit or see it in nas navigator. I assume that takes a while to run?
-
No, thats it. All TFTP does is serve the unit the boot file.
Now you need to get the latest firmware for the device from Buffalo and update it.
-
Downloading at the minute.
Does it matter that it cant be seen in nas navigator? Used angry IP to scan the range but no IP address for it found.
-
Not sure. Can you post a screenshot of the TFTP window?
It should look something like this :
See at the bottom where it gives the device an IP?
-
Thats excatly what it gave me. Same IP and all 192.168.11.150.
I have a flashing blue ligh on the unit, I rebooted it and got the 7 reds again, so done tftp again and serverd the blocks, just waiting on the firmware DL to see if I can re flash it.
-
Sounds like youre cooking on Calor!
Read Step 4 in this guide.
You need to modify the lsupdate.ini file
http://buffalo.nas-central.org/wiki/Revive_your_arm9_box_from_scratch
-
I have the firmware 1.24 and 1.26 on my lappy at home. Ill try that when i get in and let you know
Cheers for your help amigo.
You LEGEND!

No probs.
I should be online later, so Ill keep checking in. If you get stuck, give me a shout.
I thinks its very difficult to kill one of these things, as the boot files are stored on the HDD as opposed to a chip.
-
No luck mate.
LSUpdater not seeing the unit to install the firmware :whoops:
-
Is it seeing the device far enough to pull in the boot files through TFTP?
In all honesty, I wouldnt worry at all about the data on the HDD. If you download Knoppix, you can get the data off the drive before taking the drastic measures.
I had a unit that wouldnt read TFTP, couldnt force the flash or anything.
I took the drive out, removed all the partitions, put back in the box and it prompted EM mode, and a successful recovery.
-
Morning matey.
It basiclly does what you have in the screen shot. The only thing is, when I ran the TFTP boot, and piwered up the unit, I got the red lights after about 15/20 seconds. So I hitthe fucntion button then tftp seemed to kick in. Left a ping running constant to 192.168.11.150 to see if I got a reply. No luck.
Debting about just letting the TFTP run over night and see if it maybe sorts it.
-
That does kinda sound fluffed.
Id download knoppix and have that standing by for disaster recovery. Then once its safe we can do a manual flash.
-
Sounds good. As long as I got the music and photos of it. Thats all that matters
-
Backed it up yet?
-
Dude, its panic stations, got knoppix and went in to see if the data was there. Not showing me anything on the disc!!
I have a USB caddy and the drive is plugged into that, windows see the disc in the computer manager but doenst recgonise the volumes. Lnoppix sees the volumes, when I mount the volume it just says 991 free. But for some reason it has the default share and spool folder so I dont know if the data is still there or maybe I have done something worng. Complete linux n00b!!
Please help!!
:stupid:
-
That sounds bad! The work we have performed so far will not have removed any data from the drive.
You need to "Find" this software : http://www.ufsexplorer.com/rdr_xfs.php
and that should recover everything.
-
Thanks dude,
came across a piece of software to recover, ran a test onFriday, recoverd part of a video file (yeah), however it will take it 317hrs (13 days give or take) to do a full sweep of the disk :whoops:
Have to buy it?
-
depends if you know where to look.
-
Lol 8-)
Using a trial at the min just to see if it finds anything, then I may "look" a little harder. Worst comes to worst Ill buy it
-
Used that software on a trial basis, not sure how to get the data off it.
It shows a load ofstuff, but no recgonsible files names and I cant save them off to a different location.
-
Im not sure what to suggest next tbh. Like I said, nothing so far that we have done should have caused this corruption.
-
Here is a screen shot of the program. I wonder is it because the version is a trial.
