Title: Ubunto, Minecraft Bedrock and VirtualBox
Post by: neXus on February 15, 2023, 05:33:38 AM
Hey all,
I can not remember who had a server running but I am just trying to do a local network minecraft as the boys are getting into it and they been really good and enjoying playing together. Right now one has to be playing for the other to join that world. I would like one running all the time.

I have Virtualbox and Ubunto running on my mac mini which is my network machine at home.
I have the latest Ubunto setup and I got Minecraft Bedrock server installed and I can have that running.

I have issues with connection though and I know it is probably around the VirtualBox ethernet setup, Ubunto network setup and the ports. I have been googling and trying a number of things for a few nights now and not making progress.
Anyone with any advice etc?

I've only ever had a locally running server when I've done it myself (the Tek server we used to have was on a hosted platform, I still have the DNS entries for it).

Looking at this guide: https://www.linode.com/docs/guides/how-to-set-up-minecraft-server-on-ubuntu-or-debian/

Suggests you need to be forwarding port 25565 (which you would configure in Virtualbox as per the below example) and you will need to open up firewall access for it as well.

Maybe it would be simpler running in a Dockerised container? I'm not sure if that's possible.

That is for the Java version mate. The Bedrock version is quite different.

Ahh sorry, I didn't even click when you were talking about Bedrock edition. I would just use the Java one but that's not cross-platform is it?

It was me.

Tbh, if it was me in your situation, I'd investigate Docker.
There's a bedrock image - https://hub.docker.com/r/itzg/minecraft-bedrock-server
I run a linux server and everything is containerised, and it's much easier.
Tbh, my kids play Minecraft too, so I may look at doing the same thing.

Docker is a lot more lightweight too.

Thanks. Will look into it but I did manage to get it running. Getting some disconects I need to look at. Not from my PC at all but from ipads over wireless (Server is wired) so I need to see what is what there. But if Docker setup is a more lightweight I may give that a go.

thought I'd have had kids long ago, just never met the right person to settle down with

I have now, luckily she's half my age so there's plenty of time yet

just don't want to be an old man dad too old to play with my kids
