Downloading stuff
on: September 04, 2008, 14:35:13 PM
Firstly who likes my Subject for this post  8-)

Secondly, being someone who does download the odd film but mostly loads of tv programs.  Should i be worried about being hit by some ISP outsourced or even ISP letter?  I frequently hear people being hit with letters.

I use emule plus, but only use internet sites that have links to ed2k hashes which are what they say they are.  I never use the search function from within the applicaiton itself as I do know that is how others get hit as they are scammed in downloading something.  I also never download music or games, so presume I am less at risk.

A mate of mine said he uses torrents which are supposed to be much harder to track; although I personally think its horses for courses.

Any other software which I should have as a necessity to block out any nasties ;-) well other than virus software.  My router has most ports locked down.

Opinions?

It seems to depend on your ISP. Be dont seem to give a crap but when I was with Pipex I did receive a telling off e-mail on two occasions, although one of them (rather bizarrely) was for a perfectly legitimate and legal torrent.

If youre into downloading torrents in a big way then I understand Peerguardian 2 is a good piece of software to use, however Ive never really used it as I only ever really torrent the odd game if the developers havent released a demo, and once in a blue moon I might grab a TV show if I want to watch it and cant find it on DVD, I just assumed I was very unlucky getting clocked by Pipex.

Not had a problem with Nildram. Though well be swapping to Be at somepoint.

I always figured the people you hear about that get the letters etc were the ones that were seeding loads, or downloading lots, as in, the computer was never turned off so it was downloading 24/7, or as near as damn. I guess it also comes down to whether whatever it is you are downloading is something someone doesnt want downloaded and is sat there logging all the IPs connected to the torrent?

Be rule. Been using Be Pro (connecting at 22 down, 2.5 up) for a while now (Be24 before that) and its always been great for me - constant 2-2.2Mb/sec.

Downloading - encrypted USENET downloads.

Recommendation;

News reader client - Newsleecher - 10 pounds
News provider - Giganews unlimited/encrypted (20 connections, 200+ days retention) - 15 quid per month
Finding what you need - Newzbin.com - 30p per week

Well worth the investment.

If you are worried about being caught. Dont download.

Privateer - you must be completely retarded if you cant figure out how to save your emails when changing provider. Think it over.
