I have an MSDN copy at the moment, its nice enough, but you can tell its still a beta.  Its less stable than Vista, but at the moment I kind of expect that.  Ive had issues with the ATi drivers not working very well, but then again I dont think itll be long before they do work ok.

Running Public beta 7000 at the moment, and speed wise....It knocks Vista into a Cocked Hat!

The only thing that wont run properly so far is Zune player.  But a quick extract and install the specific files and its fine.  All hardware detected and looks quite tasty.

Strange cause everything Ive seen says Win7 boots faster than Vista but thats it, nothing else has changed much speed wise.

You may have been looking at the transition stuff, 7 features on the vista base, as they swap over more stuff to the 7 elements its got faster, should get faster each month now till launch at the end of the year and all being well with the progress bung in the new kernal, which they should do if things keep on the pace. They say it wont just to cover their backs since they are having to rush it out.

My system is in no way cutting edge, its a 4200 x2 with 2gb ram and a 6600GT Graphics card
And it behaves like a faster machine on XP.  So far, Im convinced this is the Vista Killer.
All my hardware was detected out the box and even works properly outputting to my Sony TV.

Lets face it though, with the general opinion on vista being pretty negative, pretty much everything is a vista killer, including my left pinky.

I will just put this in here. Seems there are rumours that Microsoft are going to be offering free or discounted Windows 7 upgrades to users who buy Vista PCs after July 1st. So if you are buying a new computer it might be worth postponing until then.

http://www.infoworld.com/article/09/01/07/Report_Microsoft_to_do_free_Windows_7_upgrades_1.html?source=NLC-DAILY&cgd=2009-01-07

Im still sticking with XP. :drama:

I find that funny though, they say after 1st July 2009, what about everyone else who paid full whack for the OS and then be told to go buy another OS as they messed up lol.

Must admit though I have Vista Ultimate x64 and it works like a dream on the shuttle SX38 but it does get sluggish after a while so constantly tweaking it.
Title: Re:Windows 7 beta leaked
Post by: Serious on January 08, 2009, 10:57:40 AM
Its simply because they want to rip off as many people as possible again but also to prevent a hiatus in sales. If they dont a lot of peeps will postpone upgrading until the new OS is released.

Indeed, but the thing is the majority will sit back and wait anyway bar the likes of OEMs etc as they need the OS.

Personally if I could get the games I play to work in linux well I would make the swap. I have used the likes of Cedega and Wine but they tend to cause a few problems for me.

Any idea how much it will retail for, and if they do the con that is the multiple different versions and prices?

Im guessing if Win 7 is the Xp of the latest OSs Ill switch from Vista around about the time that work etc start to move across. Presuming I have work haha.

AFAIK prices havent been announced yet, but expect them to be roughly the same as Vista.

http://www.theinquirer.net/inquirer/review/392/1050392/windows-7-is-enough-to-kill-linux-on-the-desktop

Seeing similar, It is beta so it has issues and a way to go yet and while MS are saying early 2010 release people think just before xmas will see 7 launched. In Either case that is some time to come yet and from what I am reading so far even Linux people are liking windows 7. With some more changes and feedback from customers of which MS seem to be listening over the coming months it holds well that 7 Will be a decent OS and one I will switch too.

Hoping, really am. Read that they are putting a lot of focus on the 64bit version as well, rightly so.

Ive downloaded an official copy of the public beta. Now to decide if its actually worth bothering to burn and install it.

My overall opinion of Vista isnt too high, as you all know, so if I actually like this its probably going to be a miracle on the level of Lazarus.

Please dont hold your breath...

I have installed the beta and had a quick mess about.  My first impression is that its already better than Vista in a beta form lol.

Im runing a 1 gig of RAM P4 2.40Ghz and its running better than Vista is on my mates laptop and thats a dual core processor with 2 gig of RAM.

Simple things like the users folder is much easier, just documents, pictures music and videos.  Not all the crap vista bungged in like contacts and that muck.

If you havr the offical beta and spare hard drive or the space to partiton one, I would chuck it on.

It crashed when I put the wrong drivers for my wireless when trying to connect (just froze) but a reboot remove and unstall updated drivers it was al sweet. Not had any issues so far either and I really like it. Task bar is finally decent etc.

Only gripe so far (after setting display stuff to 100% not 150% (to big) ) is that it will show open tabs of IE but not firefox.

No.
Developer release last week, Thursday MS Release for public but they rolling it out earlish to try and avoid the server crashes of last week.
I love it, Some getting used to and Some features still not yet come to it that were not ready and some bugs but it is more solid then Vista already and just dam nice to use, The tastbar is brilliant, Takes the good bits of the windows bar and what mac does and combines them well. They finally have something to work with now.

Meh, trying to download the release candidate but it seems to be going really slow (1kbps!).

Not sure whether its just getting hammered on their end, or whether a firewall or something is blocking their java download client :(

I love it too. Im currently running it in a VM and using it for office tasks but my plan is to stick it on my laptop just as soon as I can confirm driver support (Dell XPS) :)

Its what Vista shouldve been.

All sorted. Just trying to get the flash plugins so I can actually get on with my work now.

Anyone got any ideas on whether when MS releases Win 7 properly, if theyll do some sort of upgrade option for people using the RC? Im not talking about a free upgrade from the evaluation copy to full, but just like in Vista where you could download and upgrade from home premium to ultimate etc, whether theyll make a download/purchase option to update any changed files and change the licence?

Will be a bit of a bugger to have to reinstall everything in 3-6 months time :D

EDIT:

Found this on the MS Win 7 RC site, shame, can but hope theyll change it later
Quote
Can I upgrade from the RC to the final version of Windows 7?

When you install the final version of Windows 7, youll need to do a clean installation. So plan on backing up your data then reinstalling your applications and restoring your data.

Title: Re:Windows 7 beta leaked
Post by: zpyder on May 13, 2009, 22:56:05 PM
Tis easy, even I can do it, and thats saying something!

Can install from vista so no messing around with dos or boot from disc etc. Not sure how much Id trust the ability to upgrade vista to the RC, especially if your vista install is screwed, so may be better installing to a seperate disc/partition. It automatically sorts the dual boot milarky out, making Win7 the default to boot from if a diff OS isnt selected at boot.

Im back to using vista. Mostly as everything is installed on the OS and I CBA installing everything I use regularly to only end up reinstalling Win 7 when its released. Didnt find much wrong with it, though not too keen on the task bars grouping system (Yeah I know you can ungroup windows, Im talking about the way the quick access icons seem to merge with the taskbar, without being seperate etc!). I guess its just something Ill get used to over time.

Keep using it, it is just different. I use a macbook pro so I kind of have got used to it. It does make it actually easier, you just hover over and close windows / tabs from there rather then going into the program. The quick links also are very useful.
Some may not know but if you click a program icon in the taskbar and drag up (hold click and up) you pull up a quick access box and you can open the recent files for that program and other options depending on the software support for it or just right click. The pull up is mainly for touch screen but it has been put there as well as a right click.

Well Ive finally got round to installing it on my work workhorse.  Its a Dell opitplex with 2 19" W Dells through a cheap 7 Series card.

I started installing and left it and went out for lunch.  When I came back, it was loaded, on the desktop, had picked up all my drivers and allready chose to put dual view on for me.  Within 2 hours I was up and running on the domain with main office apps.  Its quick and feels very stable.

Ive had a taste of the taskbar, I really like it, pinning active and inactive applications, and I certainly like the grouping preview of the apps, ie for example.

Shake A window to get rid of all OR.
To the right of the time you got that small box. Hover over it and all windows go to glass view or clicking it will minimize them all.
They just moved it into a better position with new abilities tacked on too. GREAT

Love it more and more as I get used to things. Small things like defragging more then one drive at a time tickles me, It is a lot faster at it by a mile too.

Thunderbird sucks ass

outlook express rocked !!!

EDIT:

infact, sucks ass doesnt do it justice I fricking hate it, only slightly less that this sh*tty windoes live mail that seven came with, and I really ****** hate than

I dont care about it looking pretty, sorting out spam, or any of the other crap it can do, I just want to check my email... and for it to run as fast as possible

the first thing I do whenever I re-install is spend an hour going though every possible option and turning everyhting off, making it look as simple as possible, making menues appear instantly instead of all that scroll out bollocks.... my windows 7 looks exactly like win98.... and thats exactly how i like it ;)

I not know what Thunderbird you use but mine is even simpler then Outlook and easier to use right out of the box with the added bonus of addons so I can tie it with google calendars and more, AND if I Fancy make it look like anything from outlook to apples Mail.

I see Apple had to have a dig at it at the developers conference over old technologies.

I absolutely love the new take bar.  Im launching recent documents from it all the time.

Apples Snow Leopard is cool, looked at it and thought - yeah, get that for my macbook pro. But I also saw the price. Their updates normally $129 ish but now only $29. Compared to Win7 After quite a bit of use it is nice but not a patch on it I think and I think they looked at that and new this and slashed the price big style to get people to buy it.
