KVMs....which to get?
on: December 25, 2007, 12:11:44 PM
Ok, Im needing a bit of space back in my room, so Im going to move the Linux server underneath the main gaming machine. I know Im going to need a KVM but Ive trawled egay, and there seems a plethora of cheap n cheerful ones on there.

Are these any good? Or will my Video quality suffer?

Cheap KVMs = sh*t.

Bought one from ebay and while its "adequate" it just fails to meet the standard of a decent BELKIN one.

Cons: Flickers with high speed video, faded colours/ghosting, also if a phone goes off near it, it turns to sh*te. :)

Pros: they cost £8 on ebay, and they work, sort of.

There is a shame I dont believe there is anything like this product for linux, as well I used to use this quite a bit.

Actually thinking about it, just use VNC. Simple.

Just get a belkin USB switch.

Cheap ones are nothing BUT a PITA, because they do not work as you would expect.  You end up screaming why isnt my keyboard working.

Get a used on ebay. Should get a good one for £20 used.
Quite often belkins on there with cabling, etc.

There again... for £10

Have to restart both machines to get it working again.

Crikey. I thought they were too good to be true really, also I never thought Id hear "quality" and "belkin" in the same sentence :D

So a belkin one is preferable then. Thanks for your invaluable input peeps, thats saved a lot of pissing about! Also, I recently bought a 9dbi antenna for my netgear to boost the signal. Made bugger all difference.

Hey Egg, that seller you linked to gave me a laugh, somewhere down in the conditions of sale it says "Bidder must agree to pay before the auctions (sic) ends".

Paying the seller before the auction has actually finished? Lol.
