These are pretty awesome. Given how paranoid hollywood and the music industry are about torrents/streaming sites I can see manufacturers getting upset with this.

Want the latest fisher price toy for your kid in the future - just download the plans from piratebay nd print it. Print your own Lego etc...

Maybe we can take back some manufacturing from china - perhaps some companies in future will just mail you a file to print once... (would require some form of copyright protection being developed to thwart re-distribution or multiple copies).

Then again perhaps lots of consumer products can become open source...

I've seen those used for very interesting stuff.

The scanning is good enough for 40microns, I assume thats some pretty high resolution scanning there.

Doubt the cog was an artifact of the scanning, looks to me like a bit of CAD software was used to design the layers within the spanner. Scanning just gave the dimensions and basic shape.

even better... there's mahcines to print in metal now.... it's not proper solid solid... a bit of a honeycomb to it... it's about 60% metal 40% air

but then once it's done you can dip it in molten brass (or others iirc) when you pull it out and it cools the brass has filled in all the air gaps and it's nice and solid :-0)

They made one elderly woman a replacement lower jaw from titanium fused together with a laser then coated with a ceramic. It should be a lot tougher than the original. Now all she needs is to mug Jaws in order to get her false teeth...
