Hard Drive Cach, does it make any difference ?
on: April 17, 2006, 11:39:47 AM
Im going to go for Raid0 in my shuttle, but I cant find a drive like the one I already have, so Ill get 2 new ones.

I use naff all space becuase Ive got a network stroage drive I use to keep everything on, so Im thinking Ill just get a couple of 80gig Sata2 drives...

the thing is, as 16meg cach drives are out there I thought I may as well get em, but the smalleds one I can find is 200gig, which will pretty much tripple the cost for me, and I begrudge paying it when I wont use it.

so is there much difference between 8meg and 16meg cach drives ?

edit/ps, Im guessing being sata2 its only really going to make a difference with writes where the actual disk cant leep up with the info being sent to it ?

Cache makes very little difference to speed, the drive being SATA2 makes even less. Get a couple of Baracuda 7200.9s and youre laughing :)

cool, thought as much, just aint seen any reviews / benchmarks so i thought i better check :)

I know SATA2 wont make much difference, or any at all tbh, but I might as well get it, the drives are the same price as the SATA1 ones :)

If you want quiet, there is nothing in the same league as the Samsung Spinpoint drives.

samsung spinpoint it is then !

Baracuda 7200.9s look the fastest, but any drives in raid0 should be plent fast :)

Its what I use in my xbox.  Seagates, Maxtors, WDs all very loud in comparison.  Also very cool running

In this situation the bigger platters used in 200GB drives could well make a big difference compared to the smaller platters in the 80GB drives.

I would find out what size platters are in each drive.

This is why I chose to go for 2 x 250GB Hitachi Drives instead of 4 x 80GB Hitachis.  The 250GB Hitachis have 125GB platters, the 80GB Hitachis only 40GB platters.  Basically, read and wtites are much hígher with the 250GB drives as the platter density is much higher.

Just something else for you to think about :)

i thought about that after reading the post about your new pc... thing is, ill never use all that space, im only using about 30 gig of the 300 gig drive I have now.

I like to be able to format at the drop of a hat, so I dont store much on here
