Or perhaps not, Have a look at the latest computer shopper. It has a processor review in. guess which comes out on top?

If you want video encoding the I7 will give you an advantage, but this is a specific area they are designed to do well in.

When it comes to Call of Duty 4 the Core 2 Duos rule, leading with the E8600 3.33Ghz. Really though the review tends to point out that the processor doesnt make much difference in speed, what counts is the graphics card.

Pete pointed you to some reviews. Hello 1 click overclocking upto 20% extra performance gain.. Hello more customers who might have bought your Dual core to play COD4

As soon as you say someones googled something youre admitting that you are too stupid to use it.

Perhaps you should look at the talbles in that review, the core 2s often beat similarly priced core 4s

Dawn of war 2 - core 2 wins over core 4

Sacred 2 - core 2 wins over core 4

World of Warcraft  - core 2 wins over core 4

get the direction here?

Prototype is different, but then the Phenom 2 wipes the board here.

as to your rofl Ive already said the i7s are considerably faster - when doing things like VIDEO ENCODING. This will obviously carry through onto the I5 but has no aspect on games.

So your laugh is on yourself. Now go away before you totally embarrass yourself.

Tbh. Take a step back, and look at the title of the thread.

"Getting the most out of your money"

This does not mean getting the most powerful/new tech currently available. It may well be a case that some older, not quite as good stuff, is so much cheaper now hed get more out of his money going that route, than by spending a lot for a small performance boost.

If you had done your research beforehand, you would realise i am all for Dual Core, i have said plenty of times on these very forums that Dual core is the way to go for gaming.

The original argument was because i pointed out that quad core is the route to go, against my own usual opinion if i might add.

I did however document my reasoning, which i have explained, i.e. I could price up a Dual Core system all day long, but the truth of the matter is, that 9 out of 10 will go for a Quad, whether you like it or not.

My argument stopped, but you continued, Mr Google Keyboard Warrior, you can try and pull rank all you like and call me a moron and tell me i am embarrassing myself, but fact of the matter is, i dont care, facts are facts, now go and hound Intel and AMD and let them tell you which processors they sell the most.

PS. Guess what system i am currently running, thats right DUAL CORE...

i5 is £50 cheaper than e8600.

But on ebuyer its more expensive? Also would you need a new Mobo for the CPU or does it use the same socket as Dual Core? Id imagine a new mobo might cost a bit given the age of the tech?

New Mobo plus new memory. But it depends on how much he can make selling the old stuff, or if its compatible, with a socket 775 and suitable bios.

hehe this is turning messy. Yeah you need a new motherboard but if youre buying new it makes sense to switch to the new platform.

The E8400 or E8500 still look good  ~£230 will get you a decent board + 4gb ...but then if you look at where Intel are going i3, i5 and i7 will all have minimum 4 threads (either physical or logical). Thats where things are heading thats why Im saying i5 with its sweeet turbo mode looks a good buy if you can put down the extra beans for the platform.

I dont want to stir it up any more, the logic to switch to the new platform is good, but does it pay to wait a little while to get 2nd gen new stuff? I mean, it always seems the very first lot of gear released on a new version is A: initially expensive, and B: never as good as what shortly follows. Question is how long do you wait?

The problem I find is if you wait for the next gen there will be another gen waiting around the corner that looks more promising. If you get into the mentality of waiting for the right tech to come along you end up never upgrading. Had friend in uni still using an ancient system because he was waiting for the next big thing to come along.

Why I tend to go for mid range stuff and save the difference. I might be a bit behind the latest CPUs but the amount I save more than makes up for it and any minor speed gain makes no difference to my use.
