£100 Debit Card Limit
on: March 13, 2011, 22:08:25 PM
Just wondering if this will effect the whole world?

http://uk.gizmodo.com/5781321/banks-are-planning-to-cap-debit-card-purchases

If something like this takes effect people who use Debit often will be forced onto Credit cards for online purchases.. Sucks..

Might happen in the US, but I can't see it making it pass OFT here.
It's all fun and games until a 200' robot dinosaur shows up and trashes Neo-Tokyo… Again.

anything to do with banks those in number ten will allow tbh , banks already rip you off in the uk with hidden charges for using debit cards (although a small amount) . had this with my last bank and asked why i was charged for using my debit card , all they would say it was a mistake and i was refunded 5 years worth of charges (only worked out to about £45 though)

That would never fly here, in general we're a lot more savvy than the Americans (it seems they have to pay bank cheques even :-\) it's not the sort of thing the banks could quietly slip into place.

I would like to see banks issue a new kind of instant payment card. Like they have in Hong Kong where they can use their versions of the Oyster card
to make small purchases like newspapers, snacks, drinks, etc. just by flashing their card.

As for enforcing a debit card limit - then I will just stick to online purchases that take paypal.

just read a little more about it. It seems that in the US they charge a debit card fee per transaction & the rules are going to cut the charge
by about 2/3rds

Didn't Barclays trial this type of card in London?

Yeah it's not just London either, and Orange have just released the same, ran by Orange, I got one through work as it meant I got a free fiver, but don't expect I'll use it... I think the limit per transaction is only a tenner, but can see it being easy to clone or possibly even acidently swipe, although there may be pin protection? Not actually checked yet?

You get contact-less payment now on a lot of credit cards, ive got it on my virgin and barclaycards. You pay by touching your card to the payment handset. I think the limit is £15.

People worry about fraud but ive always found the cover so good im not going to worry about it.

I thought they was RF-ID - so would be quite difficult t duplicate - I guess the risk is getting close enough to debit some micro transactions with a device.

Surely not that difficult, you would just need a reader? Then duplicate off that?

You wouldn't even be that close?

Maybe my understanding is incorrect?
