Help me choose...
on: September 14, 2009, 10:00:57 AM
As some of you might (or might not) know, I bought my first house a couple of months ago *yay*

Well since that time Ive done quite a lot of work to it and I am finally at the last stages !
I am just in the process of cutting and fitting all of the Skirting and Architrave into the Living and Dining Rooms :)

The choice I am having trouble with though is whether to paint said mouldings in Gloss, Satinwood or Matt (Eggshell) finish White :/

There are pictures here :) (Its just the 2 rooms shown in the first 5 pictures).

I have a feeling that against the colours I have picked, a shiny finish will look over powering. On the other hand though, having everything in Matt may look a bit too soft :/
I know that Satinwood is the happy medium but Im just not sure.

I should mention that the Skirting is 5" Torus and the Architrave is also Torus, so its a bit bigger and more decorative than standard moulding.

Take a look at the pics and let me know what you think, Ill probably ignore it anyway :p

Gloss white (for me) always looks a bit cheap/tacky and not contemporary. A nice matt would be my preference for those rooms.

Looks like a very nice place/area btw, congrats

I really want to start saving to get my own place, Im tiring of renting.

Stained in a suitable colour and left as wood.
It's all fun and games until a 200' robot dinosaur shows up and trashes Neo-Tokyo… Again.

I think I agree with the statement about Gloss. Theres something about it that I just dont like.

Im really pleased with the house and location (small close of 15 houses). It is in Bracknell (where I come from) but thanks to the market drop it actually cost me about the same as a 2 bedroom was going to 6ish months earlier :)
The only downside to it was that I bought it expecting to redecorate but ended up having to do a lot more. The total cost still hasnt exceeded the original asking price or current market value though, so its all good :)

@ Goblin...
I bought pre-primed MDF skirting as my parents have stained wood and I just couldnt bring myself to repeat their style choice :)

I think Im on the fence between Satinwood and Matt; probably leaning towards Matt.

Yes I do ;)

The red in the living room wasnt finished when I took the pic, its had a couple more coats and has dried back a lot deeper / richer.

Righty.

I think Im going to Gloss in the Hallway as the boarders on the stairs and cupdoors are already glossed out there.
That will give me a better idea of what itll look like.

i like the colours in the rooms, especially the blue and the red. But like you im not certain what would look good with them. Im probably inching towards matt

Got kids? A nice gloss would help in terms of wiping away the inevitable pens and mud.

Otherwise Id probably opt for satin, on the principal that I agree that gloss looks tacky, I dont think wood should ever really be shiny unless its varnish/laquer.

Matt would do the same thing Zpyder, the main thing is that its oil based when it comes to wiping stuff off. Personally Id go with matt, I did in my place.

I used Diamondmatt paint for my walls from Dulux, thats washable and takes a fair amount of abuse. Its waterbased too, very good but a bit pricey for paint afaik.

Also, that red wall of yours is gonna need some extra coats, loads. Red is the worst colour to paint according to a painter and decorator in the family and also from our own harsh experiences.

Ive never been a fan of white gloss paint, as its always reminded me of old Victorian hospitals where the brick walls were painted with thick white gloss, giving the paint a clinical feeling, like in an all white bathroom.

But if I had to choose I would pick the matte.

Tradition is to paint it white gloss but thats gone out the window since Acrylic paints came in. Matt is probably a bit too flat though.

Ultimate preference is to let the wood show and use varnish if possible.

Cheers for the extra input :)

I went around a m8s who has painted everything in Satinwood and it looks quite good.

I still cannot make up my mind though. I think the main crux of the problem is that I have chosen bold colours for the walls and that these should be the focal point, not the mouldings.

I guess that if I paint them with Matt and its not to my taste, itll be easier to repaint with Satin (or Gloss) than it will to go from Gloss to Matt.
