If not, maybe go to B&Q/Homebase and rent one of their Rug Doctors? Theyre supposedly quite good.

Yeah, the rug doctors are pretty good.  I used to get them for free when a mate worked there.

I dont want to have to pay though...other than for cleaning fluid.

Scrubbing brush + stardrops + hard graft = very clean carpet
