Title: Back Again!
Post by: White Giant on July 18, 2010, 21:49:31 PM
Hey chaps.

Sorry Ive been away for so long.

Moved into a new place with the missus, had a massive amount to do at work, etc, etc.

Hope everyone is okay, will be checking every morning and evening as usual from now on.

Anyone fancy giving me a quick update, drama? Has Sam finally had that bare-knuckle fight with Spite?

BTW, berks is a muppet(j/k), and LSL is fit(not j/k).

Some of those names sound familiar.... Berks for one.

Who was LSL and Spite?

I couldnt think who LSL is, Spite ran/runs OCUK.

Berkswolf our old admin isnt on here any more though, same for Juggernaut. Its a shame really as both were characters.

Good to see you back WG

Wizbiscuit? wizbit? dunno, was a quite nice blonde of a similar name to that.

Oh, and good to see you again WG, to continue the Predator theme, I assume you have been away busy pushing pencils.

Jymjim the Royal Mail Marxist. I think to him we were all assets - expendable assets - and he used us to get the job done, got it?

I used to hang around with Jimjym in the really real world.  Not heard or seen him for years.
Hes litterally dropped off the map.

He worked at Tekheads for a few weeks helping me packing back in the day, but Sam and Steve didnt keep him on as he was a clockwatcher and graft wasnt a word in his vocabulary.

Meh, I thought he was alright until he started to get a bit threatening via PM because Id killed him off in "Avatar wars" he didnt get the fact that Id planned on killing everyone off at least once each.

Wasnt there a lady called Aniarchia or something who was associated with Jymjim? The stories "she" told were pretty unbelievable and Im still not sure whether it was a massive con.

Jymjim was a nice lad but a total sack of sh*t at work. The kind of person who knocked off at 5:29:29 and wasnt happy if you asked him to stay 5 seconds later.

Then there was the daily 30 minute sh*t he would take on company time.

Google clock watcher and thats him.

Most people left due to big arguments over something or other. People dont always agree and some people just cant accept that. :)

It isnt about what you say if you ask me, it is about how you treat people. :)

It is sad that so many people have left, I am not around as much as I used to be but even I have noticed the drop in regular faces.

We dont need PR :P

Just get the "S" back

Failing that, we just need to get people visiting, a better link from Tekheads perhaps a banner with the flavour text "why not visit our forums if you need any question answered" etc

And the plan to make a Review/Article site will surely bring in more people as it gets spread around the net.

He left after a huge argument over Iraq in Speakers Corner and never returned sadly.

He did have a tendency to get a bit too angry if people didn't share the same view as him.

There was some muslim bloke too - Ice something or other who also had a tantrum and stomped off & some admin guy who threw the toys out of the pram because some people messed around with the forums at one of Sam's parties or something.

People take the internet too seriously sometimes....

Unfortunately it's the way the forum is going, if you look at the top 10 posters of all time, 3 of those have disappeared, I'm not sure if there is an easy way to check, but how many people have posted in the last month.

It'd only take a couple more key people to leave and I think it'll get very quiet on here, it's not like our efforts to bring in more people have been fruitful, the HTPC guide is one of our largest traffic drivers and is getting on for near 10k visits, the number of members it's created is still relatively few.

The people who post on here regularly, pretty much all know each other in real life I think? I'm one of the exceptions to this, although did know some people back in the day, both of them have since stopped posting..

The last few months for Web Designers/ Developers who are doing well is/has been a very busy one. That time of year. Me and Nige are core in plans a number of people will be involved with to bring life into things. We just been very busy but hope to get the ball rolling further soon.

The ideas are great and they will hopefully drive interest back to the forums.

People as Top posters who are not around are..
maximusotter - Who has never posted since we been on the PHP forums.
Serious - Not posted since March
M3ta7h3ad - Not posted since being on these forums
Beaker - Not posted since July
redneck - Never posted on these forums.
Sam - Posted a bit when on PHP but stopped posting after the work to convert over the database.

Their email will be in the system. First point of call to see if they want to start posting again is the question - Why did they go?
For each one why did they go?
Sam for me, a great guy started to get a lot more adgertated(spelling?), I bumped heads with him over Web stuff but I know others in other areas as well. Who still keeps in touch?

Then if with their emails, someone who is a mod/admin flicking off some emails, ask how they are etc. Maybe tell them some plans of whats to come etc see if they want to come back.

It is sad, especially when a lot of them it seems just stopped posting for no apparent reason or somehow haven't found their way back. Over the next couple of weeks I'll be moving the forums onto a new pro hosting account so they should be far more reliable than with GoDaddy currently, at the minimum I'm going to mailshot all the members and see who we can drag back again but I'm going to try and think of some other ideas too.

- At one stage the site was up but for server reasons it was put under a stupid port and a load of people could not access it. So they moved on.
- Other people had a large post history and a lot of old cool posts which were all wiped. A number of people were not happy and left.
- Just amount of downtime for a period and on off and lack of forum features were also factors for some leaving.

- There was a really dark period where 4/5 people just attacked everyone. Abuse non stop. It was quite a surprise how some people just turned nasty. That put people off, couple of people were banned and others did not want to hang around for abuse.

- There was another period (not so bad though) of abuse and I know people even though they did leave, just got put off a bit again.

Another core factor was everyone grew up. The modding and what not which was a big part of the site went away, people have got married and had kids. Sam sold Tekheads and things just moved on for everyone.

That is why the forums need to be just part of something bigger and better and hopefully we can do that. It would be nice to do a mail out and let people know.
I have always thought that Tek should properly set up a paypal account fund and people chip into it when they can so things like a perminant game server could be formed. It could have  BF3 on it, Minecraft, Team Fortres etc and a ventrilo channel for people to use for those and to just chat.
An MMO to pick for MMO tek fans and a proper guild to continue to tap into etc. Properly flesh out the fan page, google + Circle... Youtube Channel...

Properly build up a community and a site which is the portal to it all and lead to the forums. So the forums will just be one aspect of something much bigger.

Icekey/Icekay? left after selling a dodgy phone to someone on here and got sh*tty when they wanted there money back

Redneck got banned after nexus spat his dummy out, Naturally Red never did quite get the hang of quitting whilst he was ahead, as Nige said, I't was some time ago 2006/7 at a guess

Zoon left after we all messed around with the forums at one of the samcrashers, I think it was something to do with messing up the mods lounge or something, Again around 2005/6

Now I do remember someone getting banned for setting his avatar to a pic of serious with twat written across his forehead??? Maybe Nige can remember. (and I believe I still have that pic somewhere)
I still have Mr_Roll's t-shirt for those who remember Cornrocker.

It might have been brummie, tbh there was a very short period where about 3/4 people got banned, it was just all kicking off.

I'd let red come back if he was to behave himself, when he wasn't being a tit he bought a lot to the place :)

Everyone fell out with maximusotter at least once if I recall, mostly due to those heated discussions he would get into in speakers corner.

Didn’t he eventually leave because of such a discussion?

Wow, I'm having a serious nostalgia moment reading through the list of people who are no longer around, but also amazed by those of you who are still knocking about.

I don't know if you'll remember, but Emez, you and Jymjim came to visit me some time back and I came up to see you too - nice to see that you're still around, although I too haven't heard from James for some years.

Some of you may remember me, I was more outspoken back in my youth but I've mellowed somewhat. I had 1500 odd posts way back in the day, but when the DB got wiped I lost heart somewhat and drifted away. Has it really been 10 years...

No one! Ever does - forum discussions. As soon as people take it to that level of attacking the person not the discussions and the people loosing their argument turning to insulting people they are the ones in the wrong and deserve to be banned.

On re-reading my post it looks like I implied they were different people; BXGTi16v was Mark's old name, yes, but he did also had a brother that was into the cars. It's funny how people seem to vanish right before concluding a trade with someone. I genuinely hope he's alright and is coming back at some point!

Mark still owes me a battery for a laptop I bought off him. Haven't been able to get hold of him, seems to have vanished off the face of the earth.

I wouldn't worry about it... I bought a projector and a cisco phone from mark and both times he posted them to me before the got the cheque...

I find trusting people are also very trust worthy :-)

I wasn't implying anything with regards to Marks' trustworthiness, just that he still owes me a battery for a laptop I bought off him and I haven't been able to get hold of him since. He seemed to be very busy at the time of the purchase so I'm not sure exactly what happened to it or where it ended up, I believe it was posted but then never arrived, then posted again or something, then he apologised profusely for the hassle if memory serves.

Lovely bloke and a pleasure to trade with all in all.

Sorry to bump this thread but nice you see some of you lot are as grumpy as ever.

How is everyone?

Still grumpy as ever and only got back on myself after a 7 month absence. Fibromyalgia isn't a nice option, now I've got 365 day a year flu symptoms to go with my sleep, muscle and joint issues.

Thankfully nobody can catch it off me.

Emez is a name I've not seen in a very long time, glad you found your way back  :)

Good to see you back Serious, sorry to hear you are suffering more though. Do you have medication to reduce the symptoms or are you basically stuck with it?
Title: Re: Back Again!
Post by: Serious on December 20, 2011, 20:37:20 PM
Basics is I'm stuck with it, most of the medicines presently available which might help don't do a smartie worth of good. Those that do help often come with unacceptable side effects, a good 2 months of this year was in a drug induced haze trying out a medicine that was supposed to ease the symptoms but ended up with a near inability to think, although I seem to remember being very happy...  :heehaw:

Trading in pain and discomfort for being a medicine induced moron isn't my idea of a good deal.

Unfortunately there is no permanent treatment available and some discussion between 'health professionals' as to if it exists at all! Seems very real to me though  :dunno:

Still keep my nose in from time to time, although you almost lost me this time.

What's with the new domain name? :D First the S disappeared, now the S is back but we've lost the .co.uk :D (Realises that this puts his joining when it was :81)

p.s. apologies for the thread necromancy, but vanity made me search for my name :D  :nana:

We dropped Tekheads and were going to link the .net domain to tekmonkeys.net as well, but that plan only half worked. :P

People take the internet too seriously sometimes....

nah just got bored of a few idiots that were and still are on here !!

Icekey/Icekay? left after selling a dodgy phone to someone on here and got sh*tty when they wanted there money back

Fun times.

i don't remember selling no dodgy phone, i was the mod of the for sale forum, i left because i had a heated argument with berks in the mods lounge and decided to leave

I had a few problems with Icekay and a transaction many many years ago back in the glory days of the forum. Seems some people are repeat offenders.

get the golf remaped nige, it makes a massive difference

the guy who did mine is awesome at it, and he lives down your way iirc ;-)

costs about £200.... but that's for a proper remap, guy sitting in your car with a laptop making a custom map, test driving it etc...

Title: Re: Back Again!
Post by: Clock'd 0Ne on August 26, 2015, 21:35:22 PM
What's a PS? its 1999 mk4 TDI, its done just under 200k. The turbo pulls quite nice in 2nd, sh*t in 3rd for some reason and reasonably in 4th.

Post by: knighty on August 27, 2015, 03:46:08 AM
PS is the metric version of horse power... use doe most cars after 1998 ish and pretty much everything now

no idea why, but it seams to be used for all diesels but only some petrol's

Title: Re: Back Again!
Post by: Clock'd 0Ne on August 27, 2015, 08:20:11 AM

Which letters are red on the TDI Badge?
Title: Re: Back Again!
Post by: Bacon on August 27, 2015, 18:29:42 PM
Look in the boot by the spare wheel there is a label with the engine code, get me that. :P

If its 5 speed it will likely be 110bhp and 6 speed 115bhp, i believe those to be the figures on the pre 2001 engines.

I would assume they all remap well.

If you want something fast, cheap and diesel then consider a Vectra C, i have a Face Lift base model, you need one with the Z19DTH engine, which produces 150BHP and a sh*t load of Torque, you can map them to 185BHP and buy them for peanuts.

The Sportier looking Astra 3 or 5 Doors with the same engine sell for double the cost or more and your not saving an awful lot of weight.

Which letters are red on the TDI Badge?

GT is in silver, TDI is in red.

I'll probably have a look in the boot at the weekend Jamie when I fit my new head unit. It's a 5 speed.
