Banking security over the phone
Reply #15 on: May 02, 2010, 15:35:20 PM
Banks never ask for personal info on the phone or by e-mail (well I do not do any phonebanking). I use internetbanking but only from home or on my own lappy.

One have a cardreader which asks for card pin at each
transaction (well I can do multiple payments and sign all in one go) one is a little box easy to bring (USB stick size)
but I feel that it is secure as long as you use your own
computer with noScript etc. The cardreader is a bit big to bring so I prefer the other one when travelling but one has to use it more times on the banking page so the card one is easier to use at home.

Egg evidently does. DOB, Post code, Mothers maiden name. Who knows if they might have actually asked for the full password at that point, I was really surprised tbh. I was half expecting when I phoned the number on my card to be told it was a scam, but it wasnt. The only thing I can think of that they could do differently to make it safer, would be to skip all the security stuff all together, and basically send an automated message or have someone phone, text, email, or all of these, to say to phone the number on the card. No details requested and then at least you know youre through to the right company, unless someones been devious and swapped your card :|

Out of interest would you answer security questions if you were called by the bank, or would you always take the option to ring them back to be safe?
Actually I was rung by my bank once and I was v suspicious. It was basically a marketing call and I questioned the man, saying, "how did I know youre from NameofBank Bank?" He gave me a number to get back to him through the regular bank number and I did, just to check.
Anybody ringing me and wanting to confim their identity by security questions isnt going to give me any confidence tbh, so I would always ring them. But then most companies appear to say (even online, like Paypal) that they will/would never directly contact you anyway.

had this recently - HSBC trying to get me to upgrade to some premium account which offered me very little extra only Id have to pay a monthly fee - unfortunately I had to go through a bunch of security questions to verfiy who I was(???) when theyd phoned me. Was also annoyed as the call took 5 mins of my life and Id asked at the start whether it was a sales call to which I was told it was a call regarding my account and Id have to answer some questions to confirm my identity before they spoke to me... Then shortly after the guy launched into some chat about this silly account which didnt offer me anything Id really need or want and after pretty much countering any benefit the muppet carried on with his speech and says can you see how this would be of benefit to you - erm no, not at all actually, youre asking me to pay over £100 a year for a bank account when you already provide me with one free of charge, also how is this not a sales call?????

Interesting you ask this, the last time HSBC rang me, the conversation went like this :

Me : Hello?
Her: Hello, this is so-and-so from HSBC. Can I take the third, fifth, and sixth numbers of your security code to confirm your identity please? (Which is used to logon to internet banking)
Me : Who is this?
Her : Im calling from HSBC, I need your security code to proceed.
Me : You arent getting it *click*.

I went into my local branch later in the week to ask about the call, and they said it was standard practice. The call came from a private number, so how the hell do I know it actually is HSBC? Could just be someone with my DOB and initial login code (which can be saved in a cookie! - worst idea ever HSBC), that needs the security code.

*edit - Damn BBCode.

Hmm in sweden they will not ask you for such stuff, my wife use phone-banking at times but she calls and it is automated (no person to speak with) she has to give a 5 digit code and gets some choices about what she wants to do.

They never call you and ask for personal info that would be stupid. Codes etc. is sent by regular mail so you want to have
a lockable mailbox so nobody can send for a credit card in your name and when pick your box before you get to it.

Im actually finding the variety of security practises posted here between banks quite surprising.

Especially as it seems that the banks asking for some security details when they call seems fairly common, whilst at the same time they all love to provide infromation stating "We will NEVER ask you for your personal details by email or the phone". Since when are my DOB, post code and mothers maiden name not personal details ><

Personally I dont bank online as it would just be another thing to worry about, though I do do telephone banking.

its never really bothered me..... if someone takes my details and spends my money.... the bank have to replace it...

my card was cloned in a petrol station once (according to the bank) and someone spend 8k on I tunes....

all i knew about it was a phone call from the bank and a new card a couple of days later..... nothing to worry about and no hassle :-)

That sounds suspiciously as if youve been Alan-ising the local bank staff (female of course ;))

Ive no idea how my bank would perform under similar circumstances and tbh Ive not needed to do any online banking; the most I have to do is send a cheque off every now and then.

Both my father and me have had a run in with cloning, once each. He had a few hundred quid spent, I just had someone try and spend £20 on king.com. Both times we got the money back, Im not worried, its more the hassle more than anything else.

The banks been pretty good, even gave me back £40 that MS charged me for when I renewed a lapsed live subscription (MS had a policy of charging for the lapsed one and then charging for the new 12 months!)

The 10min timeout pisses me off. You should be able to set it to half hour or something.
I know sh*ts bad right now with all that starving bullsh*t and the dust storms and we are running out of french fries and burrito coverings.

I just wish we had Mint in the UK.
It's all fun and games until a 200' robot dinosaur shows up and trashes Neo-Tokyo… Again.

Wasnt there a Mint credit card? It had a curved side as some sort of gimmic?
