Title: Beware beware the big scamming gamling auction site that is......
Post by: Walrusbonzo on February 02, 2008, 21:49:16 PM
www.telebid.com

This sums up the site - http://www.everything2.com/index.pl?node_id=1923649

However, today I managed to grab a PS3 for less than £160 delivered, this is including the bids I bought.  I still have some left too :D

Lets just hope I get it.

Could work out nicely for me, but its one hell of a gamble.

Some people will be lucky. Others will waste a fortune.
Complete scam.

AS lucky as I was to get a PS3 for £160, I do not recommend this site to anyone.

Wait until very late on and only bid then. Really its rigged in their favour and anyone using it should have their brains examined.

Except when it does go to the last few seconds and someone bids, the timer goes back up.

Then again.

And Again

And Again.

problem is it sucks those people in looking for a bargain.
Before they know it theyve spunked all their bids & got nothing.
Its like the Hi-Lo auctions on the radio.

you would have to be a complete tool to bid on anything at any point except for the last couple of seconds in an auction

interesting site though - bet there are a few inefficiencies in it - Im sure if you had the time you could look into things like the average number of bids at the end of an auction, average time by which auctions get extended by last second bidders, average price increase when the auctions get extended and come up with a model to find the auctions worth bidding on...

I.e. a simple model - if you estimate that it would take on average 100 bids across one or more auctions to secure a PS3 then it may be worth going in at the last minute on PS3 auctions where the price is < the cheapest price available elsewhere - the cost of your expected number of bids (£50) - the average increase in price in previous PS3 auctions - some x factor to account for the extra faffing about (or if youre a tight student who is into this stuff - the amount you consider acceptable so you can profit from re-selling on e-bay)

youd probably want to look at the variance of some of these variables or how they are effected by price - i.e. are massively discounted auctions subjected to much larger extended bidding times, greater single bids at the end period etc.. - the optimum auctions to bid on might not be the ones offering the cheapest price for the PS3 etc..

Check the other link in the OP, the dude tried to write a program to predict those things, but he couldnt make it accurate enough becuase the public dont have enough info.

Maybe Im confused, but the difference between this and a TV auction where you have to call an 0898 number would be nothing right?

All I can see is they charge you up front. Pretty clever stuff but a total scam unless you are lucky.

No. The TV auctions that charge you for the phone calls have almost vanished anyway. They have been replaced by countdown auctions where you buy something but get it at the price the last item is bought at. This means that once you bid you are guaranteed to get whatever the lowest price is.

Even with the standard TV auctions you are bidding on several items and you can wait until near the end without problem.

Yup again and again there is definitely those who sit and watch bidding wars then try and sneak in the last second hoping that othes dont click fast enough.

Also this reminds me of gambling machines everyone puts loads of money in the machine then someone will come along have one two goes and win.

Gamblingbid.com <--- what it should be called.

I was just watching a bid & in the space of about 5mins it jumped over £2.50 - in incriments of 7p - thats 35 bids x .50p = £17
Current price is £17.64, thats 252 bids - £126 in real money :-o

Walrus PS3 cost £160 - Thats over 2000 bids / £1000!

I need to get in on this act  :w00t:

Actually, the PS3s bidding went upto £127.  I got a £20 off voucher for joining, that took it to £107.  Then add on the £50 I spent on bids, thats where my £160~ went.

But still, £127 final price equals lots of bids, equals lots of money for Telebid.com

Ahh, I thought maybe the bidder had thought "I can either lose the £500 Ive put into bids.. Or lose out on £100 by just bidding over.."

There really  should be a button on this website to wipe it from your memory. I better close it before I read it too much..
