Update:

Interview and the day as a whole went really well - in fact it couldnt have gone better. I think i might be offered a job as tech support rather than just customer service, but apparently ill find out within a week or so...

your value to an employer isnt necessarily correlated with the number of hours or the amount of effort you put in

This is why I reckon IT can provide some decent opportunities for people - if you find an area where your skill set is in demand or you acquire a skill set that is in demand you can demand a decent rate for your time and effort.

Too  right

I now work 15-20hrs a week, tops - and earn far more than when I was an IT manager, and regularly working 80hr weeks.

Plenty of time to work on other things!

Very nice!

Information to anyone in the North West as well.  In the next few months where I work will be taking on a shedload of Staff.  If you dont mind doing tech support for home users its 19k + 15% bonus, though the hours are somewhat annoying for dayshift, and it would involve travelling or moving to Preston.

Bollocks, Why cant I get an IT job that pays 18k!

Laughed at the o2 lady that said I didnt have enough "experience".  I told her Id been doing this for 15 years, hows that not experienced enough.
I do consultancy work for several companies, as well as techical assistance to a mate whos trying to set up his own company.

Depends doesnt it?  Im pulling in 26k + bonus for the job that Tech Guys are paying 14.5k + bonus for in North London (which is also pushing the wage up for all the other businesses round here).  plus i rent a 3 bed house for £500 a month, and my council tax is about £100.  I doubt I could even get a 2 bed flat for that much down south, plus I wouldnt have the spare cash to do half the things i do.

Sounds like youve got it pretty sweet Beaker. It definitely makes sense to stay up north if you can, living costs alone make it so much more worthwhile.

not at all IMO

if youre buying then perhaps - but if youre renting then the increase in salary is much greater than the increase in living expenses - most young people would be much better off financially working in London than working up north

huh?  Hardly.  One of my ex-uni mates is on the same wage as me, living in London, and hes still got about an hour to get to work in the morning.  Hes also always complaining hes skint.  I was looking at stuff the other day, a lot of companies are now moving a lot of their jobs elsewhere in the country.  BBC being a prime example, they are moving almost all their admin and clerical up to Manchester because its cheaper to employ people.  Salaries for many jobs are the same in London plus a small percentage.  Would it be worth moving to London for 5k more than im on now (which i would struggle to get)?  I doubt it.
