thanks. as i said before, its something ive been considering doing for a few years now and if i dont take a shot at it now then ill never do it. i really hope i get in but if i dont, or if i do get in and dont enjoy it then ive got nothing to lose.

Do it, youll probably find being away from friends & family will bring you closer together - youll email more n chat on the phone for hours and stuff.

Forces people are sick bastards btw, youll see some wierdos do some nasty stuff.
I know sh*ts bad right now with all that starving bullsh*t and the dust storms and we are running out of french fries and burrito coverings.

well, ive just had a chat with dave about me doing this and hes 100% behind me so ive submitted my application form. i should be hearing from them in 5 working days. im excited. and also slightly nervous.

seriously - Ill say it again - go back to the careers office and have a chat with the RAF guy too - make sure you evaluate all the options - the actual clinical/medical side of things isnt going to be too different regardless of the service you go in to & everyone has to do basic soldiering skills whether in the Army, Navy or RAF - but shorter tours and better accommodation must count for something.

If you were wanting to be some elite battlefield soldier type then Id definitely recommend joining the army - but the fact is youre looking to be a medical professional which means your main job/skillset is going to be the same regardless of the service you join - if I was going to join the services full time while following a particular profession i.e. medicine, nursing, dentistry, accountancy, legal etc.. I would almost certainly go for the RAF above the other three even though Im in the army at the moment.

tis worth a look/chat with the recruiter as it is another fairly similar option and it is a fairly big decision youre making

There is no real advantage joining the army to do nursing.

well you get to experience stuff you wouldnt be likely to get to experience as some civvi nurse stuck in an NHS hospital

aero med for example with the RAF nurses - dont get many NHS nurses who have to cope with patient care while flying injured troops back to the UK at 20,000 ft in a big tristar jet, deployments to different countries e.g. dealing with tropical medicine when troops go overseas to do jungle training

plnety of stuff that medical staff in the armed forces get to do that civvies only come close to doing if they say volunteer for unpaid charity work overseas

Dave: I was being specific to the army, a position with the RAF or Navy would be completely different as you have pointed out. I thought about posting that option after I had switched off the computer last night, couldnt be bothered to reboot and then forgot about it.

Cornholio, you had obviously already decided to try it, all you needed was a push. TBH I could see that from the start. But I would urge you to at least think of the RAF. If I hadnt suffered the arthritis problems I have then I might be a nurse or something in that.

Remember you dont have to stop at being a nurse, some go on to semi-doctor or surgeon training. I had one nurse doctor sew up a cut on my hand for me and she did a damn sight better job than the young woman doctor who did the split on my forearm.

OK, the doctor was a damn sight prettier but really that doesnt count when they were effectively terrifying themselves over what was a minor injury. That meant I had to deal with her emotional problem as well as lack of training and be the ing patient!
