Theres no reason for the AA and BSM to follow the highway code - presumably they could ask for 10 years experience if they fancied? (Subject to age discrimination laws possibly).
"Within your 'purview'? Where do you think you are, some f**king regency costume drama? This is a government department, not some f**king Jane f**king Austen novel!"

Some companies have higher standards than the highway code so it ends up 3 1/2 years instead of just 3. You can still instruct at 3 years though.

How odd.  never came across that before. But as above, those two examples dont seem to advise that.

The AA

BSM
http://www.bsm.co.uk/become_a_driving_instructor/4a.html

Yes, its 3 years & over 21 to accompany someone. But you dont have to pass an exam to accompany someone. You pass the exam to be able to teach. If anyone was taught by an older brother or parent or uncle, etc. Id be very suprised if any of them have passed their ADI exams

The BSM page says it all really..

I dont have a single motication for having an engineering degree, I do want to know more about engineering for personal reasons and for other things I might want to do in the future.

Hmm, who could I contact though who would know some one who drives prototypes?

"Dear Mr The Stig..." type letter?

Sorry, I understand now.  How odd.  Would have not thought there would be a difference between instructor and accompanying someone.  Points if anything.

If you have no motivation to do an engineering degree, and all you see yourself doing is driving cool cars around a test track. Youll fail getting anywhere.

"Why do you want to work for us Mr er... Roll?"

"Cause I wanna drive cool cars around a test track"

"right...okay.. er... your not for us mate"

Dont you need to pass an instructors exam in order to solicit your services as a driving instructor?

And dont do motorsport engineering, at most places its the biggest joke this side of leisure & tourism.

Look, youve got to be sensible.  You might like cars, but that doesnt mean you want to sit in one all day.  The same goes for other careers in automotive engineering etc.  Look, Ive worked at two car companies that some people would give their right arm to work for, but its all the same as anywhere else.  Once youre in the company, the work you do is so far removed from the final product that you could just as easily be designing an electric window control system in a skoda/designing a food blender/air freshner.  Youre NOT going to be going in to work every day all excited because you might see £1M of car just getting to your desk.

If I were you, id keep seperate your leisure activities and your job.  I love cars, but I sure as hell dont want to be fitting door handles for the rest of my life.

You seem to have got the wrong end of the stick...

Firstly, I want to be a driving instructor as I was thinking of being a teacher, however, for several other reasons I dont want to become a teacher (in a school). I thought, well I could be a teacher, but mix it in with one of my pasions: driving. I like driving, I like the idea of teaching people how to drive. It would give me a sense of achievement when Mr/Mrs/Miss/Etc Smith passes their driving test.

That might sound like BS but it isnt.

On the test driving sort of thing, I dont want to go to Alfa and say I want to drive your new cars around your track in Italy all day.  I saw a program, I think on Channel 5, that focused on Landrover test drivers. They did a little test where they drove a freelander into a big curb, knocking the oilsump off, or somthing like that. I find those tests interesting and fascinating and thats the stuff I want to do which after quite a few years of driving about and teaching people I think I might be suited, however if I have an engineering qualification then thatll be good if I just want to do into somthing else, other than driving cars.

you might want to google a place called mira just outside of nuneaton. they do vehicle testing for teh major 5. however you wont get anywhere near vehicle testing nowadays thanks to software like nx4.

the first bar honda was designed using it, without the aid of a wind tunnel.
look how good it was.

That means f all, theres still butloads of field testing.  Software is irrelevent.

I worked in test automation for one of my employers, attempting to cut down the amount of test driving necessary.  HiL is what will take over, not software.
