Title: Food supplies down in some areas due to the Tory B****t disaster.
Post by: Serious on August 03, 2021, 16:05:58 PM
'Remoaners' warned them but they did not listen. It was all fake news and scaremongering. It will take at least 18 months to train new drivers, if they can get them.

Meanwhile the home office is still trying to deport EU citizens here legally.

The driver shortage has nothing to do with Brexit, i believe a part of tax law changed, anyone who had a home that resided outside the UK didnt have to pay tax, i believe the law changed and they now have too.

Also this has been ongoing for 20 years or more, its about pay and conditions as always.

Also there is no new blood coming into the industry, young people want a work life balance and the logistics industry doesnt offer that, its also been sh*t money, you get treated like sh*t by managers and customers  etc, look at the situation with Lidl, if drivers were turning up 5 mins late they were being turned away or told to wait for hours on end, now Lidl have changed their tune as various associations kicked off about it, this is the norm in the industry.

Couple this with during the pandemic, local councils closed all the toilets and facilities, sh*tting in plastic bags is not fun and not very hygenic, just being out for 12 hours a day is bad enough without facilities, some of these drivers are tramping all over Europe and getting treated like second rate citizens while keeping the stores stocked up,

A year ago they were keyworkers, now they are back to being scum.

I think you hit the nail on the head there, far too easy to try and blame this all on Brexit when there is a lot more going on in the world.

Not if you compare the UK's performance with the EU countries. They have no delivery issues, no shortages at all, business booming on average.

Then we had covid last year too, so why the delay? If the issue was covid it should have happened last year. It's all Tory propaganda and lies.

The law changed because of Brexit, meaning we cannot bring EU drivers into the UK and ours get stuck in Kent trying to deliver to EU countries.

UK people living in the EU don't pay UK tax, EU ones living in Britain definitely do, and always have. You are just making up excuses.

There isn't a driver shortage at all.  We have loads.  We have a wages shortage.

Its to do with something called IR35, the way tax was handled, i believe until Brexit, any driver that had an address outside of the UK didnt have to pay tax the same as Birtish drivers, so European drivers had a distinct advantage over uk drivers, couple that with the fact they were living 3 families to a property, it meant they were making obscene amounts of money, a portion of them were also breaking laws, i can tell you that one big company were using cheat devices where the trucks could go a lot faster than the legal speeds, they could also circumvent the tacho units and could work as many hours as they wanted to in a week.

All cheating, Brexit and the DVSA have stopped all of this,

There isn't a driver shortage at all.  We have loads.  We have a wages shortage.

Quality of life and low wages led to this, 100% and this didnt have over a year or two this has been going on for decades.

Ive read several stories recently of haulage companies blacklisting RDC sites, eg several stories of Lidl, if a driver arrived 5 mins late he has been made to wait 20 hours plus to get dropped, now the haulage companies are sticking together and blacklisting them, this could also lead  to stock shortages, its about time the drivers stood up from the big companies who bully them into submission.

Just last week i heard about a guy who had to wait 17 hours to get unloaded, after he told them what he  thought of them the security wouldnt let him off the premises until he apologised to them, that didnt stop him he removed their barrier, suffice to say if he had called the police he was being kept against his will, thats serious.

Its to do with something called IR35, the way tax was handled, i believe until Brexit

"Introduced 2010. IR35 refers to the United Kingdom's anti-avoidance tax legislation designed to tax 'disguised' employment at a rate similar to employment. In this context, "disguised employees" means workers who receive payments from a client via an intermediary, for example, their own limited company, and whose relationship with their client is such that had they been paid directly they would be employees of the client. "

So an issue for a great many people, but the biggest cause of driver shortage is still the UK government refusing to accept that EU drivers are presently needed and blocking them working in the UK. If drivers cannot get visas to work here then they are unavailable. This is a known issue and even rich Tory Brexit supporters are acknowledging the issue.

It has nothing to do with EU drivers and Brexit, that is the scape goat being used as its an easy excuse, there are plenty of drivers in this country, a lot of them have chosen different careers, a lot of them are driving 3.5T luton vans for other companies including supermarkets and couriers as they can make just as much money with less responsibility.

Take AO for example, they are paying £1500 a month, base 5 day week for a 2 man crew, driver and mate of a transit sized vehicle, the driver would typically take a bit more so say and £850 / £650 split, the driver gets his bit extra, the mate sits in the van and does a lot of the grunt work, those wages are banging for van work, plus there is the opportunity of overtime, some lads i know are making £1000 a week, you dont make that in 7.5T with Tacho / CPC and also hard to make it in Class 2 unless your in a very well paid role.

Strange that the directors of huge companies and the lorry driver's unions are all saying it's Brexit, but you make up fake reasons. Government has said that employment drop due to covid is now over but that was last year too, when we did not have a driver shortage.

Wages problem did not exist before Jan 1st so another red herring excuse.

WE DID NOT HAVE THIS ISSUE ON DECEMBER 31st. IT IS BREXIT.

The UK’s largest supermarket also called on the Government to temporarily make it easier to bring in workers from abroad to ease the issue.

How would you know, you dont even work in the industry and never have done, you just listen to MSM and make your decision from that.

Because I have read recent reports on it. I don't bother with MSM, it's crap. It's all the other reports, including from the Telegraph and other Tory Brexit papers.

Seems Boris is going to cave to their pressure and allow at least temporary visas for EU drivers.

Not as easy as it seems. EU unions look likely to go against Boris' three month visa deal, not that I trust him to honour it myself. A third of all BP petrol stations nearly out of fuel.

This is not the only source that put this up.

I would be surprised if it turned out to be 3 months, thats just a way in for many of these drivers, once in they will extend, thus going back on Brexit, you really cant vote for anyone as they are 2 sides of the same coin.

UK estimated to be short of over 100,000 HGV drivers. UK gov ready to put in up to 150....

I can see that filling the gap.

Can confirm Bacon is on the money, have 2 mates both ex-HGV drivers, got better jobs now and wouldn't go back (due to pay, conditions etc as Bacon put earlier) Both got letters asking them to go back, both laughed it off.

They put up an offer for 5,000 EU drivers, they got well under 200.

There are multiple reasons, Brexit being the biggest.

I came out of sales for a bit, the only reason ive stayed is i like the workout the job gives me, ive lost about 4 stone now and put on lots of upper body muscle, if it werent for that i would be back in sales earning double.

I've been thinking a lot about this lately, everyone keeps going on about pay and working conditions, but it doesen't look so bad to me

ignoring really good lorry drivers, just stick with the run of the mill ones.... I meet quite a few and a lot of them are total morons, not a clue about anything, for the level of training they need (naff all really, I have my HGV licence it was a piece of cake) - for that level of training they earn good money

it's not some special skill only a few can manage, anyone can do it with a week of training/driving with L plates on (then 5 hours a year paperwork recap)

(there's plenty of jobs I could never do, no matter how much training I get I'm either not smart enough to do or don't have the memory needed for it)

I think it's really down to equality, the super rich and the rich are so far ahead of everyone else (and not being taxed properly) that it pisses everyone else off - social media doesn't help with everyone showing off and pretending to be flash

too many people think they deserve everything without earning it, they expect a flash new car every year, expect to go to Disney land every year, expect to have a load of flash cloths etc. etc. etc.

This bit goes a little too far, there are some people who will never be able to do it, and some you never want to be able to do it.

My fibromyalgia can cause narcolepsy, instant sleep. Not something you want with a lorry going up to a class of school kids on a crossing.

my point is it's not some special skill, most people could do it

if there was a shortage of brain surgeons due to pay/conditions I could understand it, there's a limited number of people smart enough to do it, who have the hand eye coordination to do it, and who are willing to go through all the training etc. to do it... you need very smart/coordinated/determined people

if you're someone who could be a brain surgeon you have a lot of options open to you, a lot of ways you could make a good living and live a good life

They depended on over 100,000 EU drivers that are no longer there, and they are not coming back anytime soon.

This is going to get worse with the offer of free access to the UK for EU lorry drivers by opening cabotage rights, while the UK ones are stuck without.

ok.. loads of drivers left the UK and now there's a shortage.... everyone accepts that point

that's not the point we're talking about?
