I would be surprised if it turned out to be 3 months, thats just a way in for many of these drivers, once in they will extend, thus going back on Brexit, you really cant vote for anyone as they are 2 sides of the same coin.

UK estimated to be short of over 100,000 HGV drivers. UK gov ready to put in up to 150....

I can see that filling the gap.

Can confirm Bacon is on the money, have 2 mates both ex-HGV drivers, got better jobs now and wouldn't go back (due to pay, conditions etc as Bacon put earlier) Both got letters asking them to go back, both laughed it off.

They put up an offer for 5,000 EU drivers, they got well under 200.

There are multiple reasons, Brexit being the biggest.

I came out of sales for a bit, the only reason ive stayed is i like the workout the job gives me, ive lost about 4 stone now and put on lots of upper body muscle, if it werent for that i would be back in sales earning double.

I've been thinking a lot about this lately, everyone keeps going on about pay and working conditions, but it doesen't look so bad to me

ignoring really good lorry drivers, just stick with the run of the mill ones.... I meet quite a few and a lot of them are total morons, not a clue about anything, for the level of training they need (naff all really, I have my HGV licence it was a piece of cake) - for that level of training they earn good money

it's not some special skill only a few can manage, anyone can do it with a week of training/driving with L plates on (then 5 hours a year paperwork recap)

(there's plenty of jobs I could never do, no matter how much training I get I'm either not smart enough to do or don't have the memory needed for it)

I think it's really down to equality, the super rich and the rich are so far ahead of everyone else (and not being taxed properly) that it pisses everyone else off - social media doesn't help with everyone showing off and pretending to be flash

too many people think they deserve everything without earning it, they expect a flash new car every year, expect to go to Disney land every year, expect to have a load of flash cloths etc. etc. etc.

This bit goes a little too far, there are some people who will never be able to do it, and some you never want to be able to do it.

My fibromyalgia can cause narcolepsy, instant sleep. Not something you want with a lorry going up to a class of school kids on a crossing.

my point is it's not some special skill, most people could do it

if there was a shortage of brain surgeons due to pay/conditions I could understand it, there's a limited number of people smart enough to do it, who have the hand eye coordination to do it, and who are willing to go through all the training etc. to do it... you need very smart/coordinated/determined people

if you're someone who could be a brain surgeon you have a lot of options open to you, a lot of ways you could make a good living and live a good life

They depended on over 100,000 EU drivers that are no longer there, and they are not coming back anytime soon.

This is going to get worse with the offer of free access to the UK for EU lorry drivers by opening cabotage rights, while the UK ones are stuck without.

ok.. loads of drivers left the UK and now there's a shortage.... everyone accepts that point

that's not the point we're talking about?

There are multiple reasons, Brexit being the biggest.

Seems that the number might have been as low as 20.

knighty, the issue is we had the drivers, the UK could have just allowed them to continue their work without issue. This is more to do with populist and racist people who support the Tory party than the UK needs.

To remain popular the Tories are creating issues with the EU that hurt the British economy far more than theirs, and in many instances give the EU a massive boost that used to come to us. Worse the EU aren't trying to harm us, it's our own government!

They werent paying any taxes, they had a distinct advantage over UK drivers, we voted to leave the EU to get rid of sh*t like this
