Title: How big can you make yours!? :)
Post by: M3ta7h3ad on April 12, 2006, 21:05:31 PM
Download This (http://"http://www.pdagold.com/files/software/0000001098/the%20tower%20of%20babel%201.3.zip").

You will have 2 files in it. once called BigBabel, one called SmallBabel. Small Babel is meant for PDAs (works on windows media... probably works on smart phones.) BigBabel is for you to install onto your PC.

Head to File - Open environment

And select "standard ground" this will then give your blue screen some anchor points.... then by right clicking to choose materials, build the tallest tower possible, then test it out by hitting the play button :)

Post ya screenshots ere! :D

Shall get one of mine up as soon as I get one built :) (just downloaded it) I think Civil engineering students have an unfair advantage on this one, but everyone should give it a go :D lol... btw.. there is more to tall towers than just building straight up ;) think outside of the box :D

wine /path/to/installer/

Voila. Its a simple program, cant see wine having a problem with it :)

never got round to installing wine  :?

maybe later

Ok installed but what about the .net framework??

Erg.. install wine tools and that might install it for you :) otherwise I have no idea, Ive not tried to install it on linux myself.

My attempt so far, Cant get it to be stable for the full test however, still switching out materials for others and theres no side supports yet :D lol will take another screenie when the tower is complete :)

Yarr, statically indeterminate.  Any idea if this considers plastic deformation?

Id give it a go, but I dont want to make yall blush ;)

Post by: knighty on April 12, 2006, 22:23:36 PM
doh, would have helped if id found the "show materials" button !

and it dont count if its not stable :p

771.34 stable, could maybe push it a bit further, (and prob start over again)

edit/snip, choped out old pic for the 56k people

(might have another go if i get my ass kicked tho, aint really dont anything clever yet ;) )

Ive no idea what the first line of your post says :D lol.

Well except plastic deformation. Youll find when running it the model will "bounce" on all bits.. stuff like bungee cord springs back, steel bends and snaps, wood bends quite a bit but still snaps, and steel rope well it doesnt deform, it just seems to either stretch a little or shrink in size :D lol

Give it a go mate :D

Best I could get with a floored design, might do a better one tomorrow.

couldent let myself be beatern so quickly :p

1086.46

edit:

1412.54 now :p

got a screenie to prove it too, but might tinker and get some more out of it first / start over with the same design :p

edit2:  did a 1480.xx with a an adjusted designe, but messed it up trying to improve on it, nackered now, work tommorow, time for bed i think :o

LOL :) Damn you! :D I think Im gonna install it on my ipaq and do a bit of tinkering on that when im in work :D lol.

Im at 1200m, but it starts to fail about 10 seconds from the end and as its falling to the ground it registers as a height of 800 :D lol hooray for bungies :D bounced my top of the first tower up and above the rest of it :D lol.

evil evil evil

cant stop, have to make it bigger.

"We have the technology, we can make it bigger and stronger..."

Anyone tried other foundations, like the narrow base?

1200 and *stable*  :w00t:

Doubt if its going to last long as the biggest *proven* though...

Actual given 1180.17

Havent tried any myself :) but feel free if you think youll get a better structure :) Just the classic ground is the easiest to build on :)

I can understand what you say as well.. Ive been working on mine. Dont think a steel structure has ever been this high :D lol I tend to go for wood only above 500mtrs, but this thing is nearly all steel.

Still cant get it stable though its collapsing in the last second. Damn thing!!! :( its like playing a game of reverse ker-plunk.

lol :D that there looks like your tower started to collapse as it finished :D lol. Same problem im faced with :D but Kudos.. you are king of the towers at the moment :D lol.

Once you get above about 1200 feet its just an accident in waiting, one actually stood up to it on the first go but when I tried again to get the screen capture the thing wouldnt stay up

TBH it was all over the place and how it stayed up is a near miracle ;)
Title: Re:How big can you make yours!? :)
Post by: M3ta7h3ad on April 13, 2006, 02:50:11 AM
yeah I find its quite amusing watching your tower as the supports gradually fail and you see the stresses transfer onto other supports. :D Its a case of reinforcing it long enough so it fails later and later in the simulation. :D

I have got that one stable with a few changes, actually I missed out a couple of beams and had trouble when I put them into place :o  All sorted now after a good few changes :)
[edit]I now have a screen capture of 1602.92 [/edit]

Come on: engineering students vs Knighty and Serious. Bring it on students :)
Title: Re:How big can you make yours!? :)

lol :D

I aint an engineering student :D lol I want FC9K Mr guru of the physics to have a go at this :D lol.

I think my design is the way forward, and I think Ive done the wrong thing by using a mixed steel and wood design. Think a restart with the same design is the key.

Hint: My design involves 3 towers. ;)

I had a solid cube of steel going up to 1000mtrs.. I then hit play, and the entire thing collapsed sideways!!! ffs. :(

You want it to be solid at the bottom and much lighter/thinner at the top ;)

nice design, the limit for the program is 1900 :o

Ill have a go tommorow when I have more time, got a few ideas to try out ;)

So far I havent managed anything above the 1840/1801 above TBH, getting a building 1900 tall that stays up is going to be pushing it.

[edit] mine goes up to 1960 But I havent got anywhere near that. [/edit]

we should put abit of a rule on the bridge, it needs to have either wood or steel road, no point having a road made of wire or bungee :P

Something different, try it...

Its a bouncing box.

I can easily string up a low level road on that one. or a high wood suspension bridge.

Now the real question is...

Using the bouncing box concept... Anyone think they can further any of their older designs by flinging a box up higher than the building? :)
Title: Re:How big can you make yours!? :)
Post by: Serious on April 14, 2006, 19:50:54 PM
Its possible, but I only get a few feet and the thing breaks. what you need is a trebuchet of some kind.
Title: Re:How big can you make yours!? :)
Post by: M3ta7h3ad on April 14, 2006, 19:55:00 PM
lol I ask... as Ive seen a tower with it done.

A piece of wood held the box... until the last few seconds which it broke under the strain.. the box then fell, and bungied up and over the tower off of the screen :) to get an insane height.
