I was watching a thunderstorm from my front door the year before last when my neighbours house got struck by lightning.......blew all the interior walls and ceilings off the timber frame (the sap in the timber vapourises due to the heating effect of 36kA through a poor conductor ;))

Most new houses in the UK have a timber frame of some sort; its also more usual in Scotland.

I jumped out of my skin cos of the bang. Went indoors and my RCD house breaker had tripped - dsl router and USB transparancy scanner broken (other neighbours modem too). Then three fire engines turned up outside  bits of brick and tile all over the garden. Poor Mr Turner said he thought hed drawn the short straw (especially as theres a big FO water tower higher up the hill covered with mobile aerials).

Ok, valid points :p

And its all topped off by the fact that you have something useful in your Location (on the left).

Im quick me ;)

Did the strike not knock you over or anything ? Im (assuming again) that you live in a detached house because surely a strike would case damage to more than just one building ?

Post by: Ceathreamhnan on July 04, 2006, 21:47:26 PM
As yes, well I am in Glen Affric but I dont live there if you know what I mean...
I was in a semi, but it was next doors detached house that got hit at the top of the roof. I didnt see it but the bang was loud I guess the porch was sheltering me somewhat. You could see the disturbance in the brickwork at the back of the house afterwards.

They called the fire brigade because of the massive smell of burning in the house. The Fire officer was on the radio to his boss saying he felt nervous standing outside! (as well it it being in the pouring rain).

Apparently once the current surge due to the lightning hits the ground it spreads out, which would be why the surge up the phone lines in my and my other neighbours house borked the phone gear connected to it. But it wouldnt be enough to damage the other houses. I have read about people being caught in the spread of the charge even though they havent actually been hit...

lightning is the enemy.

I work in IT and I hate the stuff, as it generally makes my life a lot harder

Bah it finally kicked off down here at about 5am.

The first flash woke me a fraction of a second before the boom and the car alarms.

45min later I was asleep again ;)

Further on the lightning strike saga above, my sisters house in Hants got struck whilst she was away this week - her housemate was sitting at the computer at the time => pouff!  Her dsl router is now borked also (3 days out of warranty! - well see just how much pressure Plusnet CS can withstand now   ).

The moral is - disconnect your gear from the phone and the mains during a thunderstorm folks ;)
