Title: i miss ipb
Post by: neXus on March 18, 2006, 22:05:34 PM
To all the people and espcially sam i and everyone is very very gratefull to for the effort to get anything of tekforums alive again.
people could have not bothered and it have somone try to bring it back but have it die, many a home on the web has had that happen.

But, I have been reading about these forums, its a good start, and very quick and has promise but its to basic, it lacks a lot of features that we are not only used to but are actually very usefull, the skinning for examlple is not straght forward and the back end doesnt seem to offer no where near as much as what the forums had.

Ibp free version had fixed and worked, pure pwange forums were hacked, they turned off the pm system applied the patch and working fine.

I dont know, may be just so used to it, but i do miss the old girl and still think the forum software had the most ot offer and the ease of use to do applications, and im sure all mods and admin appricated the functions it offered for them alone.

The patch isnt available for the free version - its only available for the registered version.

<--- not long had operation, and on 5 pills three times a day

But I am sorry anyway.

To the matter at hand:

Yeah, back end, admin control, skins, addons, comunity base - my view yes it is better then vbuliten.

I swear i read that they made a patch for all versions even the people on the free version.

If its still the case you need cash to pay for it, wheres the paypal account to send the money?
Is it the case you buy it then have a year support then loose the ability to get updates after that?
Im sure by then exploits will be closed and do it yourself comes to mind if need be if there is a hotfix and not availible, someone would post the code changes somewhere.

Like Nexus I appreciate the speed the forums have reappeared and that the community has somewhere to stay once again. Honestly, I do. Ive been at Tek since almost the beginning and would miss it if it went south.

However I have to wonder about the choice of software being used here. I understand that Sam might not want to shell out for VBulletin or IPB. Thats fair enough, hes already paying for hosting and bandwidth and theres no reason for this place to cost him any more than it is at the moment. That said, there are free alternatives out there which dont look like a cheap clone of phpBB with half the functionality. You cant even hide sigs on this thing for goodness sake! SMF would have been a much better choice of forum imo.

Rafael Steil doesnt allow any modifcation of his code yet, and some people have but got permision.

I dont see sam having the time to write his own, with all the features people are used to.

I believe it was more to do with what will work on his webserver.  He did try punbb but it did not work iirc.

This forum software may not have the features of ipb but it works(ish). :)

And there is a go to new posts button.  There is a small icon next to the last posters username.

One free & open source php based forum Im hearing lots of good stuff about is SMF (http://www.simplemachines.org/community/).

Seems to have everything IPB did and maybe more (http://www.simplemachines.org/about/features.php) - XSS exploits. :)

But I guess Sam loves Java....?

I should of said. Download the tools and read the manual and the copyright and interlectual property stuff, you can do what you like but some need aproving some you have to declare etc ^^

But anway, it may be the fact that there is bugger all in the database, but this forum is coded well and runs quickly.

its the also added factor jugs and co would have to learn something new as well as other admin and mods now :/

I think we should all put the effort in, testing all sorts of forums and options and give feedback, just in case this doesnt stay.

But as always its the people that run it and the people that posted that make these forums, it may not be the biggest but its linked ofton all over the web.

This looks very nice, lots of features, seems a bit slow to me though.

Sam does love java, it is what he knows and what hes good at, when i have helped Sam learn some more about css and xhtml and what you can do i hope he appricated the knowledge and the things you can do over other approaches, same with his work, he will know more then others and offer something.

But he is working on his neew buisness and i am sure busy coding other things and i for one understand that he may not have much time to put into beefing these forums up, i would not dream to think that he even should. Another reason i think we should chip in and get ipb, since so many know how to update it, and new features, tweek it etc. Not just one or two people.

Yes that does look good.

But at the end of day, like most of us Sam has so only much time and has his priorities. He can only spend so much time making the significant changes on this place.

I think its fair to say we are all gratefull for the free time he has put in to get this place up again, no one can expect him, or any of the admins/mods for that matter to work on here all the time when they are giving the time that they do for free.

Yes, this may not be much, but it is a start and we will slowly get ourselves back on our feet.
