I've discussed a lot of the ideas in this thread with Clocked etc in the past, nothing new as such but we need to follow it through this time. :P

In terms of the review Site and some of the points Xin Made..

Nothing anyone does to these forums or tries to do will save it. This is NO ones fault at all but with social media and just how the web works - forums are nothing of nothing and unless you have something which then has a forum they stay nothing. Just how it is.

I talked to Nige about tekmonkeys, mentioned before but a fun review and news site.
Review hardware, offer guides and just general news with a number of people who can write to it.

Like I said to Nige, Just think about Alan reviewing a router and as a test watching streaming porn and seeing if it works well or not. People making videos and just not doing a boring review. Real world situation of why you would buy it.
Kinect review and girlfriend breast jiggle rating :)

With that site you DO NOT loose the forum.
The forum needs to be the key aspect of the community but you need to create an interest and drive to that.
With this being SMF and if you build a site with Wordpress what you can do is for the post comments set it to be the accounts of the forum. If you want to post a comment you need to make an account which is the forum account. With that all here do no then need to make another account on the site to add comments either.
To that you would create limited comments - Kind of like twitter with only so much you can say.
With every post you make with another addon you can have it so a thread is made on these forums.

So your creating a means to discuss stuff on the forums and because you have a cool website your getting visits and driving traffic. With that site you have your google plus, tweet, facebook to get social and you also use them to post stuff that is going on in the site to build those inbound links around the web.
In turn a post has a link to the forum thread for it driving traffic to the site.

As I said to Nige it takes a minimum of 4 people willing to get it going. 1 to design and build basic html, at least 2 to build it and one more working on content. That is minimum as if you ask help here people can not be bothered (no digs, just how people are)
Once it is up and looks great and easy to use and the features mentioned you then get people willing to contribute.

You then build build build. Adverts at some point to help with things, Get some actual hardware to review from companies, look to create some paid service if it gets big to offer something more......

Build from that core concept but have the forums as an integral part of the site, discussion and community.

There is no way what so ever to drive more to the forums just as forums.

When you look at the best of YouTube like EpicMealTime, FPSRussia, etc they all do well of linking it all together. A website reviews/news/blogroll + Youtube + forum would sort that.

Also backup policy is once a month full backup (and yes I have backups of the backups :D). I might start doing the database backups bi-weekly though.

Other thing to remember is that your not going to create something like what is well established overnight. You will instantly fail if you try for it. Can not be done.
You have something a little different and build on that concept and then produce something nice and easy to use.
Giantbomb.com started out as arrowpointed down podcasts over skype, then a couple of personal blogs linking to downloads. Then a wordpress template with a bit of the style they were after.
Now they are how they are in a few years as it took off because the team and the way they review and present their videos and their writing and podcasts are interesting, FUN, and cool.

I personally think a guide/review/news site driving a community to keep the forums alive that gives you what you need to know in terms of buying something or help but doing it in a funny way would catch interest.
The quality of the design may be nice but not quite there at first, the videos will be poor quality but if you have the essense of what it will be, people will take note.

All great ideas - but its important to remember that not everyone has time/inclination to create content for a proper site. Whilst I think this sort of stuff would be awesome and personally I would definitely help out - we still need to retain the forum (or more the community) element as the priority otherwise it just becomes somthing its not.

That said theres some good stuff here. A regular forum meet for some group modding/hardware/game reviews could be legendary!! I propose Nige and Alan review those inflatable sumo costumes....

...for the good of the site of course!! :)

Thing is even 10 people contributing will tick things over. Start small and grow, Not try and rush things. Quality over quantity!

I really would like to see rolling on the re-birth of tekmonkeys. The guys that were tekheads hit on something they never roled with, could have bled through the site and be part of a one day deals section.... So much with those early dossing about concepts.

Cool tekmonkey and logo, set theme for the site. 5 banana ratings.. Monkey business section, news, reviews, guides.

how hard is it to backup the server ? do you just download it to your local pc or to another server ?  I assume the database is relativly small ?   could a few volenteers with a fast connection not do it for you / as well ?

(I'm happy to volenteer)

no idea if it's possible.... but it would be awesome if the "view new threads" page could auto update without having to hit refresh... a bit like the google mail page does for new emails ?   - guessing that works in a totaly different way, but is there a way to immitate it ?  maybe add a number to the name on the tab too ?  (again, like google mail)

that would have mro people leaving it going in a seperate tab all the time... and checking in when there's a new post ?

(more of a long tewrm idea for later on)

(p.s. my spell checkers broken)

IT Admin!!!

Also, I rue the day the Testing Forum was taken away from us.
I know sh*ts bad right now with all that starving bullsh*t and the dust storms and we are running out of french fries and burrito coverings.

Backing up is very simple, I keep a copy of all the files when they are changed (doesn't really need doing very often) and keep a backup of the database which is a simple as clicking a button to download an SQL copy of the database really, it doesn't need doing very often though as I don't much about with it and I remember to renew hosting and domains...  I could do it more regular if I remembered but there's not a huge risk to it once every two weeks, we might lose a few threads at our current rate, no biggie. Interestingly enough, I just took an SQL backup and uncompressed it is 60.9Mb

Updating a page on the fly would be done with AJAX calls to refresh as Gmail does it, there's probably a mod for it like this or something more like facebook notifications

Wub Testing Forum tees are available from the gift shop.

I think the YouTube idea is great, I'd be willing to help out, editing would help with my college work (:

Plus I have both a Kinect and boobs (:

(and I'd promise to use non backward smilies)
