Ive never used a Blackberry, could an evangelist tell me what the Bb does that makes it so amazing for email as I have difficulty imagining exactly how it is so far ahead of the other  devices.

proper keyboard on the decent ones, at least as reliable as an iPhone in the case of the hansets, far more suitable for enterprise users.  The security is also far better than just using plain exchange, right down to little features like 10 incorrect password entries (Can be adjusted) will reset the handset.  You can also apply permissions remotely, so you can have someone able to receive e-mail, but not send if you so chose (which does have some uses oddly enough).  Basically with a Blackberry alongside BES you are buying security and reliability with a trusted solution.  Also free handsets is a HUGE draw to an enterprise, and its been around so long that pretty much any business that wants mobile e-mail already has BES, and they have zero incentive to buy the iPhone.

Edit :: on a side note, i wouldnt have one myself.  Outside of a business they have little use except for people to wave them around like they are important, much like the iPhone in that respect.

The one difference is the fact the iphone is also an ipod, has a very good browser (especially with wifi) and from the looks of things good games coming.

It is a lifestyle accessory, not  business tool, that is the difference.

Both shouldnt really be considered in the normal phone market.

Weve received some BB Bolds (9000) and have to admit they are stunning for business use.

Company should be giving me one full time soon :)

I do like to keep a separate personal phone though and the iPhone has won that arguement, so to that end a question;

Is it possible to use peoples Facebook profile pictures to automatically update your iPhones Contact pictures?

Not currently, but I suspect that someone will make it possible. What you will be able to do is save their Facebook pic and then set it as their contact picture.

heh, actually they are both flashy type items for people who want to ponce.  No offence man, but the majority of non-business blackberry owners think they are cool to have one, and the same goes for the iPhone owners.  They like to wave them around like its something special.  There are exceptions to the rule, but not many!

lol ten password entries?

My company just rolled out a policy to all windows media devices that wipes the device (including secure wipe of any storage cards and internal storage apparently) after 8.

After 3 it prompts for an alphanumeric code to be entered in order to prevent accidental keypresses in a pocket from wiping the device.

It encrypts all storage on the device.

It can also be completely wiped on command.

Theres some other doodads it does as well but Exchange 2007 isnt as "plain" as you may think.

you can adjust tit to anything you want on the blackberry stuff, its all adjustable.  One place i worked had it set to one 3 IIRC.  Depends how secure you want it to be.  BES beats the sh*t out of Exchange on its own.  Im using exchange 2007 at the moment on my home server for teaching myself some stuff with 2007.  Compared to BES server its still lacking a few features by the look of things.  Ill get into more detail when I get more time with it.

Ive used dozens of different devices, installed loads of different systems, and none are as reliable or as quick to use as a BB for email.

I can open, read, forward, delete, search, sort, move, whatever with **one hand without having to move my thumb from the scroll wheel/ball**. Any other device you have to move your hand. Sounds unimportant, but when you need information FAST, it is a big thing. WM devices are really slow - even compared to a 7100v. I have been caught out on a call with a WM6 device and have been asked for figures on a proposal and I have been fiddling for maybe a minute until I got it - with the bb it was click, search recipient, bang - results there.

They are quickest for typing on by MILES as they are designed to be held and typed on with the thumbs. WM devices are too oblong or the KB is too small.

It doesnt matter how long its been on for, or what youre doing, EVERY TIME you press a button you get an INSTANT response.

I had an 8700g for 2 years. i never had to reboot it once. I had an N95 - it needed rebooting quite regularly too. the mrs has my tytn II and its rebooted a few times a week.

Its all in the speed and reliability. WM devices and iphones may well be better for the casual or non business user, but for me and my customers they are absolutely pish. Woeful. Its a case of best of a bad bunch.

Whoever said about the keyboard, yeah it pees all over touch screen phones. The one problem we have with them is the cost to our clients -

They go: ooh, BB! How much?
We say: BES install/setup + Maintainance + Cost of contract.
They go: Oh.

We have poor clients I guess. The BES install isnt too bad - its a lot but over say 10 users over a few years its peanuts. The killer seems to be the BES data plans at £28-35pm, for a small-mid business its hard to see the cost/benefit.
I know sh*ts bad right now with all that starving bullsh*t and the dust storms and we are running out of french fries and burrito coverings.

A lot of larger companies get special deals on the handsets and tariffs though.  One company im thinking of uses Vodaphone, and they pay about £20 all in for each handset.  We used to stack them under a desk and activate them as and when needed.

No, because ultimately its 1 columnist who clearly has a blinkered view on what businesses need, like yourself. :)

Personally Ive no problem recognising that BES appears to be the best when it comes to businesses. iphone however, hell no.
