Apple signed an exclusive contract with T-Mobile of Germany, Orange of France and O2 in the UK earlier in the week that would give Apple 10 percent of the revenues made from calls and data transfers using the iPhone. All three mobile operators declined to comment on the contract but official announcements are expected at the IFA trade fair in Berlin later this month.

3g IS coming to the iphone, With the fact the itouch is 8mm thinner then the Iphone it shows the form factor has shrunk some and there is now room for 3g
Could be here for the EU Launch maybe? IF not and if your thinking of getting one, hold off for the 3g version which will probably be thinner as well

Hmmm Im unconvinced.  I dont think releasing a thinner product means theyve shrunk the form factor by all that much, dont forget its a very different machine.  3G is obviously a plus but any space savings they make by shrinking the gubbins inside may well be absorbed by the extra battery capactity needed, unless they do a complete rethink and cut power consuption drastically.

It would be interesting to see pics of what exactly is inside the new ipod, that would tell you all you need to know.

Ill keep my eye out for inside stuff and post but they have(apple) said they have shrunk the technology of the iphone to make this thinner and not just removing the phone aspects

November 9th launch - O2 Has the phone
The cost will be £269 (inc VAT)

That is not tooo bad really, I was thinking it would be a lot more

Still the tarrifs are crap

Three new great value iPhone tariffs will be available from O2 starting at £35, which all include unlimited anytime, anywhere mobile data usage and, in a market first, free unlimited use of the UK’s largest single public Wi-Fi network, covering over 7,500 cafes, restaurants, airport lounges, pubs and other locations across the UK.

lol....

Minute to slow:)

Still, we all know that Apple just bought a 3g chip maker and working on 2 new versions of the iphone.

From a friend I know about the end of next year a new version of iphone will appear which will be thinner, support 3g with improved battery life using what the itouch has but will make it about the same with 3g in mind and a different screen - but will be basically the same as it is now just different cheaper tech to get the same result and of course bigger storage
The next version may or may not have a better camera but possibly a better speaker and mic

So will be basically the first old ipod style generation update with number 3 being a bit more of a leap froward.

I think a year of virtually no edge and Euro annoyance followed by more US moaning will show that 3g will defiantly be needed. It uses battery - so what, since you got wifi have a option to turn the chips off to save power for 3g and a slider in the menu to turn them on if you got no wifi.

The tarrifs arent that bad, Im looking at something like the t-mo flext 25 and web&walk, which is £3 a month less.  That gives you effectively the same amount of calls/texts, except more flexibly usable.  So in that respect it could be worse I guess.

However £270 is STEEP.  On the t-mo tarrif you only have to pay £100 to get the HTC kaiser, which has built in GPS, wifi, qwerty, GPRS/EDGE/UMTS/HSDPA/HSUPA, 3mp camera etc etc.  It makes the iphone look like pretty bad value unless youre after something of iphone dimensions/fashion status.  Fair enough you *could* use it to replace an ipod too, but for me it doesnt have enough memory so Id still end up taking my ageing ipod with me too :D
