Couple of my mates have one. Theyre no replacement for a laptop for proper stuff but for just browsing the web are great. Really easy to carry about. We were using it for planning a road trip and using gmaps.

This will not be the best tablet but it is the stepping stone for tablets now. They can be that thin and perform well and do a unique thing you can not quite do on an smartphone due to small form factors limitations but you are right Sam, these do not and wont replace a laptop.

theyre not supposed to. they;re a lifestyle netbook for the living room.

browsing, facebook, tv listings, tv control, angry birds while our lass is watching eastenders.

i fully expect to own one before xmas. i fully expect to get the piss ripped by you lot, but its my choice and i know full well that itll get hammered to death by me and the mrs. in facvt i expect her to sell her laptop and start using my mac soon after hte ipad arrives.

think about it. everything she does can now be done on an internet connected lap device. apart from word/excel. thats so infrequent its not good sense to have a laptop. going away? take the ipad. films on the plane, pics from your camera....

replaceing a netbook quite easily. not a laptop.

Matt

Depends on what people actually do with their laptop, a lot only surf the web, write and do email. Those are well within the capabilities of something like this so for light users it might well be a suitable replacement.

Something cheap, light with long battery life and some form of optional clip on keyboard/screen protector would fit that bill.

I remember one computer hack moaning about his Amstrad NC100s demise. He used it to write commercially until that point and the only thing available to replace it was a much more powerful laptop that had far less battery life. For him the battery life mattered far more than the extra power and screen. Up to 20 hours on 4 AA cells? Lets see a laptop do that!

The 3g version would easily replace what I use my netbook for.

I love the idea of having somthing thats a book size & can be used for a variety of things & not having to wait a while for it to boot up, etc.
The touchscreen makes it so much easier to used & just the right size for a wall mountable dock with external speakers for instant Touchscreen Jukebox
ala pub style (if anyone wants to write one & sell it, at least give me a few quid for the idea).

Its better than a netbook in that its got a gorgeous screen and doesnt have a sh*tty little keyboard and isnt bogged down with a bloated OS.
I know sh*ts bad right now with all that starving bullsh*t and the dust storms and we are running out of french fries and burrito coverings.

I posted elsewhere but, the best use for the Ipad yet http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yKNGGfcPipQ

Will it not be better waiting for competitors versions to come in and at lower price point?

No, because like everything that is defined by its ability to "compete with the random_apple_product" they will be sh*t. Companies need to stop chasing Apple and make their own products because it is impossible to out-apple Apple.
It's all fun and games until a 200' robot dinosaur shows up and trashes Neo-Tokyo… Again.

I already run a tochscreen & i tunes is to fidly

freebox is good because you have big arrows & letters to scroll, touch the album cover & that opens the track list.. tap your track & it queues.

Even with coverflow? (Which Im assuming you can get in itunes on the ipad? They also have that new LP stuff which looks quite cool although clearly has the issue that you have to buy all your tunes through Apple).

I tried a lot & freebox was the best I eventually found.
its each to their own, but I always like to see somthing thats easy to use & has quick navigation...
I do have fat fingers, so big buttons are a must - you should see some of the text messages I send with an iphone because my fat fingers
end up hitting 2 letters.. ive tried mashing the keypad, but still not recieved a special dialing wand.
