I heart whatever
on: April 10, 2010, 07:31:13 AM
This "I heart videos" etc is getting bigger and bigger and really annoying. Adverts and Websites are doing outside of the teen range of things now.

GRRR. Hope it is a fad that dies fast.

The fad that needs to die fastest is 3D films, thankfully the studios churning out post-production processed crap will be shooting themselves in the foot, so it should only take a few years with any luck.

The only film that has been produced with 3D in mind from the offset is Avatar, which took years and years in its inception. Ill wager its the only quality produced in 3D film we will see this side of 2015. The worrying trend is that good storytelling, cinematography and script will be sacrificed as the studios try to push a medium that no one is ready for. You have to direct totally differently for a 3D film. Did you know that it takes a few seconds for your brain to process the 3D and therefore when editing each shot needs to be at least something like 5 seconds long to avoid confusing the brain of the viewer with images that transition too fast? That means no more quick tracking/painning action shots with cuts in between. How many directors do you think will actually follow this though and how many post-processed films are going to have this in mind? Theres probably going to be a lot of piss-poor headache inducing conversions and washed up films designed solely to push 3D. The more I read about it the scarier the prospect becomes. Even Michael Bay of all people has slated the studios designs on pushing every film out and their back catalogues (right down the line to Titanic) in 3D.

I think there should be select realised few films green-lit each year to be produced with 3D in mind in the same fashion as Avatar, keeping it a premium domain for directors and artisans of cinema to really showcase some outstanding flms and the capabilites of it. But then what do I know, Im not Hollywood churning out generic trash month-in, month-out for the teenage demographic.

imo the 3D in Avatar was pretty poor. Something like Polar Express in 3D at the imax really shows off what 3D films can do.

The times I noticed the 3D in Avatar, it did nothing bar make me think "Oh, thats 3d", thus shattering the illusion of the film and drawing me out of the world. The rest of the time it made no noticeable difference, as I was just as sucked into the films world as I am with 2D films. Maybe future generations will find watching 2D films are like when I watch a black and white film, but for me Im that used to getting sucked into a 2D film that I couldnt give a monkeys about things having depth to them...

3D is the new cgi. Well get a few Jurassic Parks, Toy Storys and Forrest Gumps and then a billion spidermans, transformers and phantom menaces.
I know sh*ts bad right now with all that starving bullsh*t and the dust storms and we are running out of french fries and burrito coverings.

I expect the billion Spidermans,Transformers and Phantom Menaces will be along a lot faster than most people want.

Filming in 3D is fairly easy, you just use two cameras set side by side and use post processing. That was achieved fairly early on in the film industry.

The question is will every duff/dull weekday afternoon film also get this treatment?
