The idea was to try it out with the Technical forums at the top so new visitors can see that this is/was a technical based chat forum and not the blog of the 30 or so frequently posting members [...]As the voting doesnt seem to reflect the posts, can someone who approved in the poll care to comment please?

I agree with the change. At least the forums serve some sort of purpose/have a theme which new members can identify with rather than being yet another general chat forum. The original (an pretty much the current) membership base mostly work in IT, study IT or at least have a decent interest in IT. Im a member of a few other forums covering particular interest areas and most of these tend to have an off topic forum at the bottom as a sort of GD area.

I dont have to scroll down to get GD either btw..

Id be happy to come to some sort of arrangement for different/better software, but really you need to be pestering Sam with this, as he has it configured on the server. Im just a lowly cook.

And basically you are running the forums.

And it isnt? Actually I thought that was exactly what it had become, although it could also be described as a bitching area too.

(BTW Do you really have to scroll to see GD, are you running 800x600 or something? )

Im running 1360 * 1024 and still have to scroll down to see Sports and Hobbies or anything below it. TBH its a reasonable compromise but perhaps there are better options?

Anyway, if everyone isnt happy Ill change it back.

And thats totally unfair, if you are the only one who is happy with it then it still wouldnt be changed back.

What about those who didnt?

Personally I think that the Lifestyle section is too big, it needs splitting. Shove games and consoles in with the technical. Then split whats left above entertainment. The talk ones can become discussion and the rest stay as Lifestyle.

Shopping and trade deserve to be at the bottom.

Your point being? I know little about server/software configuration and what our java based servers support. Im not the one to lobby for a change in software. Sam sets this up out of goodwill and knows Im happy to admin things.

There is a strong lifestyle forums userbase, but we are still a technical forum at heart even if the userbase is diminished. I know few people with as much computing knowledge as some of the chaps here. Im an avid DVD Forums reader and Im proud to say some of our geeks put their flock there to shame and not just when it comes to computers too :)

Id welcome any suggestions you might have.

Now that I take as totally unfair. You know I would work in the majority favour, not in my own interests. I made these changes to test the waters, not for my own benefit. Im not paid to be passionate about this place.

Those that didnt should speak up regardless.

I think games would fit in better with entertainment, although my feelings are that hardware should still be seperate from software, i.e questions about the latest Samsung Blu Ray player having a HDMI 1.2 or 1.3 in technical, ravings about the new Xbox 360 Project Gotham in lifestyle/entertainment. Discussion *is* lifestlyle, I dont see where you are drawing the distinction?

Firstly I wasnt getting at you, I know you are doing your best but you are basically running things, Sam just cant spend the time sorting things out so its your poison chalice. Remember I used to help sort things out so I know how bad it can get. We also all know about the duff software you have been lumped with, everyone hates it as much as you do but ATM there doesnt seem to be an alternate. TBH there have been offers to buy other software and hosting.

When in that sort of position you also remember that anything that goes wrong is your fault, even if you have no control over it. If you change something then your neck is target one. Its something I dont envy, which is why I always was so vociferous about us needing another Admin BUT NOT ME!

It might not be fair but thats life. Sorry you are the one stuck with it ;)

BTW you have PM ;)

I dont understand how anyone can argue "I have to scroll down to see blablabla"

...... no matter what we all have to scroll down to see something !

Im happy to change forum software if someone pays for a VB license (or whatever) cos Im not. And at the moment I dont have a PHP server to run PHP forums on, so unless it works with Resins PHP4 support then it will have to be Java based.

someone understands the point of the change.

there was a thread way back when, that people wanted to know why there were no new signups and why new sign ups dont stick about.

well, imo its cos youre misselling the site. you advertise as a technical forum, but youve got to scroll to get to 3 techie forums in 25 total forums. nonsense.

so heres what the poll should really be.

1. do we try and get techie again by focussing on technical.

2. do we buy extekforummembersblogsite.com and carry on as normal.

FWIW I suggested CO consider the change and i think he saw where i was coming from. id love a decent technical forum, cos im way out of the loop on some of the stuff and i learn bits here.

FWIW2 - I have hosting aplenty, if you want to move to a IPB or PHPBB3 forum then all we have to do is find the right DB convertor and ill host the forum for free.

Matt

I like it as it is. I must admit I miss the old geek days and while I enjoy some of the GD and waffle posts some of the incessant whiny blogging does get annoying. As Clockd says we have a fountain of geek related knowledge and I prefer having the technical related stuff at the top. We need to attract some new people to the forum and placing a greater emphasis on technical things might help this; lately its been stagnating a bit.

Its a good idea, I like the change, it does encourage people to delve more into the hardware side, perhaps it can make more people post hardware related japery and increase forum activity.

I would however start to advocate forum advertising banners in signatures in other areas to see if we can arouse peoples curiosity, same as pimping the facebook and last.fm groups as well.

as to other methods, i remember the irc quizzes which sam held went down a storm, so we could do that.

there are hundreds of ways of capitalising on what we have, also other more gorrilla methods could also be used.

It hasnt changed a thing.

Most innovative tech post of the week.

Nominations are:

"What system should I get cause I have almost no money but need to upgrade" wow... totally different from the norm.

"Im going to give a crack, just thought Id make a post about it"

"Oh n0es... the internetz got cheaper! :o"

The award goes to:

"OH N0ES! the internetz got cheaper! :o"

Then the most pointless forum award... only one entry in this one... Development & Programming, with a grand total of zero posts.

I totally understand the reason why youve done the change, look at the huge amount of completely different type of posts we get now.

irc quizzes = lifestyle @ red.

We have bugger all technical knowledge compared to bit-tech, or AV-Forums. In fact most of the members knowledge comes from those forums I would have though, given the number of times at least AV Forums is mentioned.

Majority of "technical posts" arent even bloody technical, theyre "what do I buy". A shop assistant in pc world would help most of these people. Instead of pimping tekforums as a buyers guide, how about just leaving it as is, and solving the root cause of the problem, lack of exposure.

The change has been up for all of five minutes and you were able to draw all of those conclusions so fast?

More to the point (not aimed specifically at you M3ta7h3ad but more in general) why so much whining about moving some forums around? If you dont like it give it a few months and see if it makes a difference. Actually whats not to like, its the order of some forums, the only difference is you now have to scroll down a little to post in the lifestyle stuff. Get a grip people. If there were ever proof that these forums are stagnating and we need some new people on board this thread is it.
