London Marathon
on: April 06, 2018, 21:55:37 PM
So I'm fat, but have a marathon to do in 2 weeks. This will be interesting.

Last year I entered myself and my mate Moz in (we were training a lot at the time) without telling him. He got in, I didn't. Fair do's - he went for it top lad. Then in October he got diagnosed with terminal cancer and given 12 months to live. Despite the heart ache of facing leaving his wife and 4 very young kids, he determined to do the marathon and leave a legacy his family could be proud by raising £10k for charity - absolute hero. Needless to say I had to join him so I got a charity place.

Unbearably Moz died last weekend just 3 weeks from the marathon, its one of the hardest things I've ever had to deal with. Dooms was a great friend of his too.

So now it's me that is doing the marathon without him, an ironic turnaround from our original situation. I can't run it, no way so I'll be walking it and doin whatever I need to do to get in under 8 hours to ensure I get a medal for Moz.

I've already done my charity obligation target, but if anyone would like to chuck a pound or two into the team fund (Moz's fund) to help it get to £10k we'd all be eternally grateful : https://uk.virginmoneygiving.com/fundraiser-portal/fundraiserPage?pageId=875853

Wish me luck. Even walking - I will bloody need it!

You've literally just got everyone bouncing with that and his wife is very emotional! Thanks mate thats insanely generous of you!

When I try to regale you all with what will inevitably be a hilarious account of my marathon mishaps (I'm thinking blisters, cramp, stitch, might sh*t myself etc..) I shall do my best to adhere to your lofty story telling standards. I suspect however I will fail to reach them!  :)

Cheers Alan - it means a hell of a lot, to a lot of good people.

Thanks

Pete

I used to do the Newcastle half marathon, not running bu on the tail end ambulance following the last walkers.

If you aren't prepared for it take it easy, pacing yourself will get you there faster than running all out and then stopping.

Pete, your total has risen a bit... I barely get out the door these days and, well, I don't need it. Good luck reaching the target ;)

Wow! Thank you - again that is insanely generous! Really touched guys! Appreciate the advice too - I've been saying the same to the team - if we run early on its not that easy to revert to walking later as you think it would be. I've done a couple of half distances walking (one of them an incredibly hard hill climb) so I'm not coming in completely cold but I'm really heavy and defo nowhere near run fit. A little jog over the start line and then a well paced walk until the end should get me over the line well inside the cut off for a medal so thats the game plan. I think my biggest threat will be blisters or an ankle getting sore but I'm going prepared.

Will report back! :)

What an awful turn of events, my thoughts and condolences to his family.
I've made a small donation.
Good luck with the marathon and don't over do it, that's a long way even for a walk.

We have known each other sort of for a long time, what you asked was for us to help you honour the memory of your friend. I could not refuse to do that and still be who I am.

Sometimes money matters, and sometimes friends matter more.

I failed miserably, last year managed 3 hours 24min before I got bored and changed the channel, didn't get anywhere close this year!

Not sure how I missed this thread completely, but I've been keeping an eye on Facebook of your posts around it all though and honestly I am sure Moz would be stoked and chuffed to bits with everything you have done, his family must feel very proud and he was obviously loved by those that knew him. Tremendous effort

Hi guys,

We made it! I fell a bit behind my team and ended up rounding the last corner as they announced 'one minute until we close' - somehow after 26 miles of barely being able to walk I had to run to the finish and crossed the line with 20 seconds to spare! Insane moment with my family and friends cheering me on!

Thanks for all the support guys - can't believe we did it!
