carbon footprint - Computers

Recent talk about how computers are doing huge amount of damage to the world
Just watching Live Earth and their site, your computer even on all day only is 0.2 to 0.5 in terms of emissions which is apparently way below the national average for an electrical appliance, TVs on standby do more damage in this sense.

Do not know if its all true and exact but I would go alone with that, maybe not for some of our computers mind :( but on average, yeah.

exactly, in the middle of winder i have the PC on in one room, and the gas fire on low taking the edge off the cold in the other I use.  Saves a fortune on heating bills.

Question is do they balance the numbers of computers against TVs or just estimate the total power useage. In this case it may be that they are underestimating the power used by each computer.

Leaving on a computer might help with the cold but putting extra insulation in your home and wearing woolies might make it even better. We tend to reach for the heating rather than extra clothing in the UK, something that is reversed in countries like Spain.

I would guess that most peoples PCs from this forum would use significantly more energy than any average figures that a BBC / similar website will give you. High end graphics cards, multiple HDs, overclocked CPUs, etc. all add up to significantly more than your base-spec Dells energy use.

utter bollocks.

none have you considered how far each component has had to travel, and also how much the manufacturing process has chucked up.

My Alpha server (2100a for those remotely interested) uses (And Im afraid to say the arrival of an electric bill that should have been written in HEX to save paper was the only way I discovered this) 1400W of power at LEAST

I had it on for 11 weeks - OOPS

Thats what you get for missing half a label on the power supplies

Apart from not caring, my PSU had a big sticker saying 80% more efficient on the side of the box.
