Custom Pop-Up TVs
on: February 28, 2011, 13:14:42 PM
I quite fancy integrating a pop-up tv into a cabinet I have but im having trouble finding the parts I would need. There are 'popup tv kits' from the US for $500 which seems a little cheap.

Im thinking something similar to this guide but much neater and without losing the use of the cabinet.

I think id need the following kit:

DC linear actuator,
12VDC power adaptor,
guide rails,
TV bracket,
switch or remote control

Anyone know any UK suppliers? This will all depend on how much the parts are going to cost me, after all the tv could just sit on top of the cabinet.

If the cabinet is against a wall like that, I really dont see the point.
Fair enough if it was at then end of the bed or something.

Read the FAQ & that kit company have a UK presence - so maybe contact them.

I looked on ebay for linear actuators & came across a seller who has website thats UK based

A 60mm (suitable for upto 37" tvs) stroke linear actuator is about £240 on RS components. Way more than I was expecting.

Popup TV.net looks pretty well priced by comparison, this lift look like it has the switch and remote and power supply included and costs £225.

Cheers Egg.

PS. The unit will be at the end of our bed. The wall opposite is too far away to mount a TV on.

not any cheaper - but if you was going to DIY it, his actuators are less than £35

If you do it, please make a guide and get some pictures! :)

I've thought about doing this myself!

I'd mount the tv onto a nice looking bit of wood

then have that fixed into the cabinet like a draw that comes out of the top...
(using draw sliders)

then a couple of actuators and a remote

job done :-)

I think that's generally the technique used. Its just the cost of the kits.

If this gets done i'll definitely be making a guide. Should be able to do the whole unit, excluding TV for £500 if i get a ~£200 unit from Ikea.

It will have to wait a few months until im back from Russia so i can justify the cash.

less than £500 ?

I was thinking more like less than £100
(if you already have the unit for it to pop out of)

also just thinking.... why not mount it behind the unit ? that way you still have full use of the unit ?

The cost is in the actuators, they need to have 25" / 60mm stoke or close to be able to fully raise a TV into view from hidden. The prices are above but i dont seem to be able to find anything less than £200. Do you think you could get them cheaper? Im very up for it is you can.

As for unit use i'll be looking at modifying whatever we choose so its stiff usable, a fake back for a cupboard or shortened drawers or something if needed.

24inch actuators for £40

kit for £225

:-)

Those are the ones linked by Egg, it looks good.

So £225 for the kit, plus DC 12v converter (dont think its included but not 100%), drawer guide rails, tv mount, 2x4 for supports and some ply/mdf for base strengthening / mounting board should all come under £300. Then I just have to buy the piece of furniture. Looking at ikea £200 will get something nice (the Mrs wouldn't let me get away with anything less).

The Power supply looks like it is included, it's in the pic, also not sure you need the guide rails as I think wide silver thing will act as the guide rail?

And comes with a universal TV mount?

what about just 1 actuator (they're war stronger than you need)

bit of wood for the backplate, couple of uprights for the board to run inside... couple or draw runners... 12v supply, 12v remote... bet it could be done for under £100 :p
