Title: O2 scraps unlimited data for smartphones
Post by: TheMallrat on June 10, 2010, 23:47:10 PM
Looks like when the iPhone 4 releases users will have to pay more for their internet usage as O2 have announced that they will stop offering unlimited data usage from June 24th.

A £35pm contract will give you only 500mb free then you will have to pay £5 for each additional 500mb.

Guess this puts them at the same price as other companies as I pay around that for my X1 vodafone contract.

Bacon, they are rolling it out for all smartphones.
You watch others follow.

O2 reckon 3% of users were using 30 something percent of the network.
Annoying thing is these companies cap to sort it and then raise prices in the process.

Already doing it here in NZ but you get less MB for your buck :(

But does that make changes to existing contracts or new contracts? if the latter Im kinda glad Im safe for another 11 months. If the former, doesnt this provide a legal clause for getting out of a contract early?

Quote from the article:-

"From June 24, when O2 starts selling the fourth version of the iPhone, it will introduce monthly charges for customers under which their data usage will be capped. The charges will apply to new customers as well as existing ones who upgrade to a different smartphone"

So you are fine unless you change your contract.

The thing is, the way that reads, is nothing different from what I am on now.

I am on a £10 a month contract with a £5 bolt on for "unlimited data" which is restricted by a fair usage policy. So this monthly charge for data is just a bad rewording of the data bolt ons, and a lowering of the data cap?

nope, on the iPhone until now Unlimited meant exactly that.  Wife was hitting 1Gb some months at her old job because she was streaming (Not allowed really).  Weve recently moved her to a HD2, and shes still hitting it hard and managing 500Mb of so per month.

i only went with o2 because of the unlimted.
they wont be getting a new contract out of me.

guess this is to do more with jailbreaking & teathering.
I mean you can download torrents & p2p file share through
a hacked iphone.

maybe, but they already stated what their data bundle was with the iPhone, and it was 750Mb.  Likewise Ive got "all I can eat" Blackberry, but its compressed like mad to the point that on a VERY heavy month I use about 50Mb.  Ive also got 500Mb of standard data for use either on the handset, or tethering.  Adding to this I also get 40% off Orange contracts, provided I dont get an iPhone.  If I took out an iPhone I would lose all other discounts!  Orange have been fairly transparent, and from the start said that Unlimited data on the iPhone wasnt feasible.

Ye although the 750MB is only the FUP, the actual bundle is unlimited, and only the top few % of offenders are throttled due to exceeding this.

Hmm, I was under the impression unlimited on all phones was the same as unlimited ISPs, unlimited within practical and fair usage, even if the cap was a hefty 2gb, its still a cap.

there is a fair use policy, but how do you prove fair use?

as I said earlier, I bet a lot of these high use people have their phones jailbroken & are either downloading torrents, etc. as well as maybe tethering their phone to a computer.

I dont understand why you would torrent on a phone. Surely you can get better speeds on a PC, and the kinds of people able to afford an iphone, with the knowledge to jailbreak the phone, are likely to have fast connections as it is?

Id have thought that if they reckon 500mb is about 60 youtube videos, when they put it like that, people on the train/bus that watch the videos on the go could likely rack up 500mb quite quickly Id have thought.

no idea, but they also blamed people for streaming music, etc.

buy an iPhone on PAYG, stick the SIM card in a Dongle after you activate it, stick the handset on ebay brand new still in its box.  Sorted for free, unlimited internet usage for 12 months.
