Stop using the tip of your left index finger.

ohhhhh, I didn't think of that

to be fair, that's the same thing the surgeon who's fixing my thumb said  8)

What are you having fixed on your thumb?

the metal plates/screws in my wrist cut through the tendon you use to bend your thumb in the middle.... I can move my whole thumb around like normal but can't bend it at all, tip of index finger is the same

had an opp. to take the plates out of both wrists, need to go back to fix thumb

surgeon was keen to do a small opp to fix it in place, so they bend it a little bit then fix it there permanently, he said fixing it properly is 3 operations over 9 months and not worth it.... but the more I think about it the more I think I'll go for that, I'm not worried about the operations and I'm pretty used to a bit of pain/discomfort

surprisingly not being able to bend it is unnoticeable 99% of the time, but then bloody frustrating now and again - things like trying to puck up a little screw you've just dropped inside a pc case etc.

I had that tendon, ligaments and all the muscle torn when I had it pulled out its socket playing rugby.
Had to rebuild the tendon from a bit in my arm and pull stuff around from my palm, sounds like your getting the cheap and dirty solution :(

Plates are from when you crashed the van I take it mate?

I had to have 11 operations but the main issue was I got nerve damage which then caused chronic pain. Shooting pains up into my head from my hand all day every day and had to have some serious treatment to kill the nerves.

Just some things to note with regard to your thumb mate :(

plates in left wrist were from when I was at the top of a ladder that slid down the wall... for some reason I put my arm through the ladder and tried to get hold of the wall on the way down, when I hit the ground my wrist was under a rung of the ladder and I was on top of it, wrist was pretty mangled

broke the right one when I fell through the roof, no idea how it broke, it was pretty minor compared to the left

surgeon who took the plates out said (paraphrasing) plates in left wrist were a mess and they should have been taken out years ago, I had the right wrist ones taken out too just in case

sounds like I got off pretty easy compared to you tho!

how you doing now?

I'm banned from climbing ladders, driving, cooking...

Think I already put it up somewhere but last year I accidentally stood on a food processor blade in the kitchen. Hadn't put any shoes on so good 2 inch cut in the back of the heel. Now healed.

Have very little sense of down when I close my eyes so tend to lose balance a good bit. Turning too fast can cause dizzyness too.

You can probably tell, I haven't gotten around to this yet but it's not been forgotten.

Maybe we should call this BionicForums with the amount of metal in you guys.

they're taking the metal back out of me!

I don't really care... but at least on a date when they noticed the suicide looking scars on my wrists I could say I've got metal plates on both wrists....
now I have to say I had metal plates in my wrists but they took them out again....  you can tell by the looks on their faces they think it's bs and I've been slashing my wrists :-s

Also going to switch over to HTTPS in the coming days finally.

Hold onto your butts

So this never happened obviously

But I'm resurrecting this thread as a warning that I am going to try to plan a time to upgrade to SMF 2.1, which despite being a minor version upgrade is not trivial in the slightest, sh*t is likely to break. The main reason for this is that PHP 7.4 is end of life and I need to move the forums onto PHP 8.x before I start getting charged real monies for extended PHP support. Plus security and all that... After that I will consider doing the HTTPS change too.

Backups will be taken, ofc :w00t:

That just loads a white page now. Could go look up who owns the domain, can not be bothered though.

Rather then doing HTTPS we could do what we had a chat about and maybe get a mastadon server setup and migrate into it if people would use something more dynamic more? Get some good bots going on it etc?

Maybe in addition, but I don't want to shut the forums down, I don't mind doing these quality of life improvements, it's just a case of having time to do them. Putting on a proper mobile-first/friendly theme would be another. But we're not the only dinosaurs on the internet, the Blu-Ray.com forums are still not mobile friendly at all and they have a huge userbase. I'm always happy to discuss any and all ideas with people on what they'd like to see improved either way.
