Just thought to let folk know that all the basic scheme is done, Button colours and look and feel have been decided.
The Plan is to get it going and up on here for you all.
I will post some images of potentially new post layout (Not major, just cleaned up, modern, more space but same content etc.)
Were using modern CSS to ensure performance, lots of background images etc are gone. Button images will go in and at some point converted to sprites to again improve performance.
You want to just hit these forums quickly, if viewing on 3G it should load fast still.
When it is up, tweaks and improvements will go on based on feedback.
So... Going quickly as can and should be done in a few days but also trying to be like the original theme with improvements.

I think showing a little respect for the lad for redoing the forum skin for us is due, and months old jokes are about ready to be forgotten about, tbh.

I didn't say that, please don't put words into my mouth, i just said respect where its due, Nexus has been helping Clocked with the move, and i thank him for that, the 3x faster joke is months old.

Well I was never involved in the 3 times faster thread to start with (I'm actually a mac user too) but as someone mentioned it in this thread I thought I'd throw in the cheeky comment.... as a joke. But I'll leave it alone now - since he is after all doing the new skins three times faster ;)

Precisely, it's just a joke, and quite an affectionate one at that. In all fairness I think it's gone past anything to do with Nexus these days and has more to do with Tekforums in general, at least that's how I see it.

I should rephrase a little - Some people were using it more then a joke, not everyone and every joke runs it's course.

Hey all back on topic.
Like Sam with sorting the port code - Like I said not his fault he just a busy guy and took time to finish it, Not relibile by no fault of his own. I am the same here. I have done that much overtime I am knackered this week.... BUT...
General:
Me & Nige have gone over the colours from what I had porting from an old SamBB Theme. They were more of the old CRT Era so while almost the same we softened up the colours like the main background so they sit well on everyone's LCD's for today.
Post section...
[Please note the images are conceptial, not quite aligned, font size could be bigger/smaller, not the right icons etc]
One of the things that always happened and had people groan about on the forums when you had the ability to do decent posts and layouts etc was the dark backgrounds and being readable etc.
A white/very light grey etc like here just makes things more readable and gives you more options. One of the things that always strikes you on forums is how cluttered they are as well, things there that are not really needed and all very "bitsy"
So with some concepts found around and shown to Nige I Made the below:

Then converted it to the Tekforums Blue:

As mentioned the alignments, spacing etc is a little off but wanted to post the concept through.
What this does is.
1. Creates more whitespace, same stuff (for the most part) is still there but in this format everything feels more open.
2a. Your actual posts will stand out, easy to read and work well with your formatting etc. The couple of people who did not want the Blue theme probably will not mind it now :)
2b. With the new post layout it means you do not need to have alternate post backgrounds, Everything is easy to read and should flow much better.
3. The profile area has the information that matters and looses the clutter. NOTE: the icons would be going in as well of course.
4. It looks cooler!
As mentioned before, I think this BIG improvement but I wanted to post for peoples views. If you want boring old style that is what will be implemented but this is better. :D

if you rock this them i suspect at some point im going to ask you nicely to build a theme for my forums, which will be cash of course ;)

I meant as in not enough blue.. :oD - the text boxes are a little light - maybe I should just buy some sunglasses to read the forum :D

The quote image I will do as a transparent PNG so we can play to get it right.
Overlay is good and I basically implemented on my local version in like 10 minutes lol.
Icons - I am going through and replacing now, I got what to use for the most part now.
Buttons - Me and nige bee though and got clear style sorted.
Bare with - There are lots of elements to a forum theme, its worse then say a wordpress blog.

I'm a content over looks person so I've never really cared overmuch what this place looks like, but what you've created is genuinely a major improvement. Frankly it looks better than any forum I've been a part of (admittedly I don't get about much on t'interwebs these days since every forum I join I end up thinking "meh, it's not as good as Tek").

I can't say I really like the white text box, maybe if it was a shade of blue then it would fit in better and be more in keeping with the "tek theme", but that’s just me. Other than that it looks great.

That is the thing though - do that and your text is harder to read, you can not do much formatting, red etc does not work, links come out crap and so on.
In terms of use it should be easier to read posts.

im with smugs.. its the glare from reading on white/light - can you make it a smidge darker? maybe try #b8c0e2

Looking to avoid what this causes and that you can just get rid of the whole speech bubble. Egg - its a change to get used to and not actually a white background :)
I am sitting in front of an imac with one of the brightest and colourful screens you get, its in your face and I got the file open here and looks great.
It can always change but as mentioned if you have blue for your content background you run into issues.
The actual rest of the forums is a good example. You got the same yellow on two blue's and it looks a completely different colour.
It wont be to hard for me to make an alternative theme that is just as the original for people to switch too as an alternative though.
Trying to break away from the standard forum setup. People do not because people have got too stuck into a format even though it is probably bad. I decided as a personal project to do much more with a grey theme just for the hell of it to say to people - Hey, if you actually do this - this is better, just get used to it and you will see.

I haven't got time to mock it up so this might look rubbish, but what about a pale blue/grey not unlike what we have at the moment? still pale so you can read black text easily, blueish to fit in with the traditional Tek theme and a little easier on the eye than pure white?
just an idea, I actually like it well enough white but since some people obviously don't it seemed worth a suggestion.

It will not be hard to have a classic one, I will do that. Nige will probably leave this one available for people and at some point I can sort a light version.
Just a note about my comments....
Everyday I need to justify and explain to clients from experience and the right and wrongs about website/interface design. Mostly you explain why your doing something and why it will be better in the long run etc. You often get that someone does not like something but seeing a photoshop is not quite the same as actually having it up and running for example and using it and then understanding about it.

If we go for this, it would be interesting to see how many people go for the traditional look and how many end up going "you know what, Nexus was right, it looks better white".
Of course if it's a user selectable option one way or the other, everybody wins!

I had to mod some php etc to sort some bits.

but sort out the blue first..... we need it blue.... it's just not the same without it !

I wouldn't want emailed, but it would be nice to see a notification when you come to the site that you have been mentioned.

It is social media - all do it. Most comment systems do it now :)
I will see if I can do a notification like Goblin Said. more work then sending email but I will see what I can do. Maybe a link with "Posts I have been mentioned on" and go view as a list.

I've just been introduced to a new forum feature implemented on the VillianRom forums (http://www.villainrom.co.uk/forum/content.php?251-New-Feature-at-VillainROM-Forums-Name-Mentions) that I think should be part of the bread and butter of any forum.
A twitter style mention notification system.
The concept is that if someone typed @Nimrod in a post, the forum would notify me that I've been mentioned in said post. Thus ensuring that I never miss any posts that I should be replying to.
(Not that anyone ever asks for my opinion, they just get it ) :cheers:
A quick look at the SMF mod's page didn't yield any fruit but then I'm not sure what to search for :o

Getting close. We have it in a form we can see it on these actual forms with your posts, your images and your information.
Looks great - f**ked up in a lot of areas and tweaks and fixes and some bits need to be fixed etc but it is getting close.
Were going to launch it and then work on fine tuning with things like icons and some 1px or 3px alignments and so on to sort over time on the fly.
Soon as that is done I will make a copy of it and do a non text bubble version for people that just want on blue content.

you're deffinitely earning the "hero member" tag with this project (I know that is actually based on post count and a lot of us have it but I reckon you'll actually deserve it after all this work).
Can't wait to see the finished article, in the mean time, have one of these :cheers:

Sorry I didn't mean that... the second version that nexus is working on I was talking about, in case it was going to be similar to the old tek one, not for one minute did I think the new forum was going to be anything like that!! :)

It is going to be the blue theme but better but a bit more up to date. I not gone grazy but it is better.
I will get around to doing a boring old old one for the folk who are to fuddy duddy :) And as a personal project I will do a way modern one at some point.
You will have to put up with the SamBB V2 theme for a bit though as icons and things will be tweaked for it to get it right. Then the off shoot boring one will follow once all the issues have been ironed out.

Ah but does it have more swastikas and insight more hatred and discrimination? If not can this be worked on, it may be the finishing 'classy' touches needed :-\

LOL.
Hopefully everyone will see why and when you guys will see it, we are not stopping there as icons etc will need to be all improved.
Currently fixing up the actual post layouts. Sorted signatures so they sit right.
Still finding elements that basically going - what the hell is the point in that - and then scrapping them as they just take up space.
One of the things Nige asked was to make the header really thin, which I think I did up nicely.
Main nav has all the basics, just need to tidy it up.
Posting is pretty much there, I made this into a proper looking WYSIWYG, just some tweaks to do to it still.
Quotes I kept the blue as nige asked, just some colour fixes.
Getting there though. Core is done, just fixing and sorting out stuff now. Generally I am very pleased with how it is coming along.
