It was snowing heavily last week and its still on the ground. I had 6 inches on my car, it was like being in Dakota or something.

Yep, good inch in Clapham. Ive been out helping stranded motorists. There is no grit down anywhere. The poor Dominos guys on their feeble bikes are having to push them back to base (lol).

Post by: zpyder on February 02, 2009, 07:57:15 AM
Ive seen it, I guess I have to believe it. Currently got at least an inch down here in Dorset/Bournemouth, and its snowing pretty heavily.

Ive decided to not attempt to go into work as normal today, on the basis of the traffic reports saying half the roads are closed, and my car having not much petrol in it >< Will try in an hour or two. If that fails, I might go to one of the nearby hillforestwood things and try some photography, though I am guessing itd be better if it wasnt snowing.

Had 2-3 inches in France overnight - little to no gritting done so the roads are fooked.

Significantly more outside my parents house (6-8 inches).

Just went out in the hopes of getting to the hill.

Did a 180 at the end of my street, hit curb lost hubcap and came home heh.

Thats enough driving on packed snow for me...

I have done a 225 in Berkeley in the middle of the summer ! no rain for months , rain comes, rain + dusty streets= soapy and very slippery, comming round a bend  doing a 180 which continued, I see a driveway to a house and hit the gas pedal and ending up neatly parked on the driveway while the cars behind passes in astonishment :)

lol that sounds like something youd see in a film bear. :)

Im struggling to get a taxi and have just been told I might not even make it into Sheffield because of the weather, so I might not even get to pick up my car today :( Bloody snow!!

Heh, walked into Ferndown, tis about a half mile.

As well as my hubcap, there were 3 others, and a street sign at the end of the road I span round in has been pretty nicely knocked over!

I feel bad at my lame attempt at snow driving, but Id like to think that I made the sensible choice given my lack of skill - it was my first time on snow ever, and came home. At least I didnt damage any property or people...

People are SUCH pussies.  Its 2"-3" of snow here, and people are saying its at a standstill.  I was just driving around getting some sh*t I need, and you can tell people just dont know how to drive in this.  Its not even proper snow, its proper when its 6" or more.

The problem is the roads getting blocked by accidents. Every bloody morning when it snows you can guarantee most of the roads around here will be blocked, and the only way out will be some daft single track country road that hasnt been gritted.

If people stopped driving like loonies, crashing and then blocking roads everyone could get to work at a reasonable time, but of course you have the "I drive better when I drive quicker" self delusional brigade who insist on driving like idiots in thick snow and fog on winding roads.

You can hardly blame some people in places like where I live, where this is the only real snow weve had in the last 20 years or so, so like me it might be their first time.

Next time I will go at a snails snails pace, rather than just 5mph. Id like to blame it on the fact the estate hasnt been gritted, and driving a micra I have tiny wheels spinning fast that are thin and in a light car, but of course most of it is down to inexperience. Id have been alright if Id gone another 100m onto the gritted roads, but I decided it wasnt worth it. Its not just yourself you have to factor in, but the others like me that dont decide to play it safe and so end up crashing into the side of you...

I have to agree it wasnt that bad. My TC barely had anything to complain about, smooth throttle smooth steering give lots of space and really there is no problem.

Traffic wasnt to bad today, took me a bit longer to get into work even via country roads, at worst I was in traffic doing 20-30.

I can understand though why we seem to gring to a halt.  We are not geared up for this.  We could invest in plows on buses, keeping railways clear, winter spiked tyres, Tools and other equipment.  But this only really happens once twice a year.  Just deal with it.

If It thats bad tommorow Ill work from home.

Just tried to pick up my missus from college and had to abandon my car at the bottom of the hill and walk up back home.

Got a friend with a 4x4 picking her up now, but I just watched a 4x4 slide down the road backwards.

If it wasnt bad why work from home?

Its all subjective on your area. Down here half the roads I use to get to uni were closed. And the road I slid out on was all compacted snow/ice due to it being quite busy but not gritted. The hubcaps and demolished street sign are testament to this. It doesnt help also that its on a slight slope, so people leaving, even at 5mph, end up trying to slow down on ice, and basically sliding onto the main road which also isnt gritted ><

Pretty sure unless it warms up somehow tonight melting the snow I wont bother going in tomorrow, will just fill out some job applications.

I do also have a cunning plan, the whole cul-de-sac is deserted and full of fresh snow, Im going out in a mo to harvest it all to make the start of a big snowman...

I helped a few cars up hills/out of spaces today, bit tbh, if you cant get out of your parking space, should you really be embarking on a journey?

It is fairly easy to drive safely in snow once you get going, sometimes it is just the getting going thats the problem. Performance summer tyres on 4 inches of snow that had settled on a layer with a slight slope this morning meant I couldnt actually get going thus I was stuck. Once going just keep it smooth and in the highest gear possible and youre sorted I concur.

My street tonight at 9pm.

It had melted off and was pretty much totally clear at 5, and snowing heavily at 6.

Its stopped now.

And as threatened, I relived my childhood and used up the front and back garden and some of the streets snow and made myself a snowgirlfriend. She melts in my arms *bmm bmm tsch* though she has given me the cold shoulder tonight too. Oh well.

The nature of my job doesnt tie me to an office.  In the sense that I have clients to do work onsite and I dont have to be infront my office pc to get the most of my work done.

If Ive got visits which I know are in rural villages and Ive got a car with too much torque for its own good at times, its not allways wise to travel for the sake of it.

I saw that far too often in my old house, street on a steep bank with only one exit - at the top. Getting out during snow normally required front wheel drive cars to reverse up, or the smart ones parked in the back street.

Been raining all night, still cloudy but I doubt if there will be any snow.

Yeah, just a shame, I made her the woman she was, and it took two hours as well. Many would have given up by then, or finished early.

Seems to be all gone this morning, although apparently more is forecast for Thursday. How is it around for everyone else?

I might be able to get my car boot open today

Went to work in the snow this morning, it was terrible, also had to follow some idiot in a transit van up a bloody great hill whilst he was spinning the wheels cause he hadnt a clue how to go about it, in the end he just pulled over and gave in!

Its all pretty clear down here. It was mental last night but I think the snow turned to rain and it helped slushify the snow on the roads :D

What the hell!

The roads around me were actually gritted today so I cant really complain (other than the snow on the top is what everyone was skidding on) but that is ridiculous, my street never EVER gets gritted, its like a 1 in 10 hill or something and soooo many people cant get up and down the street, why dont they do that and stop farting about giving themself payrises!

I pay $4600 a year in council tax, so dont think youre badly off.
And what I get for it is Christmas (sorry Holiday) lights and trash collection.

Its all slushy now. BUt Ive done my bit to piss the nieghbours off by shovelling snow onto the edge of our driveway, meaning the cow next door will have to wade through 1 foot of slush to get to her car (a foot of slush on our property I hasten to add, thats the price she pays for parking half on our drive again!)

Nothing like pissing off the c**tish neighbours ha.

Been an absolutely delightful afternoon here in the Ile-De-France, 12-14c all day and a nice bit of sun. Went for a stroll in a local park was most pleasant.

Well I pointed it out to my rents and my dad laughed and my mum just accepted it. Weve maintained a policy of "it doesnt really hurt us so lets not cause a fuss" but some days theyre that far over onto our drive we have to walk around their car to get out our side alley!

Im just itching for her to say something now. IF only just for the chance to throw a snowball at her. :D

If she parks on your property and you really dont like them build a short wall between the properties, just tall enough to hit something important on the under side of the car...
